The song within is the third album by asaf sirkis' trio. It features the wonderful guitarist mike outram, a player who has studied many guitar styles, and one who uses all his knowledge to execute solos of great lyricism, power and imagination. unlike many contemporary improvisers outram knows how to use space in his solos, and he has a gift (which is extremely rare) of being able to weave melodic lines of great beauty and power. outram also plays in a style which integrates optimally within the compositional and improvisatory frameworks. if this seems too high praise i urge you to listen to mike outrams playing on the 3 albums by inner noise.
asaf sirkis is the groups drummer and composer. he writes in a style which is lyrical and exciting, a perfect foil for his driving playing which has all the technique and finesse of the great modern jazz masters i e dejohnette, colaiuta. however, asaf seems not to be a mere plagiarist.
sirkis' major influences are allan holdsworth and olivier messiaen. steve lodder on keyboards plays with a sound approximating a church organ. the group however plays with a 'sound' of a jazz rock group, but the players experience in jazz groups gives the music an interactivity and flexibility which is all too often missing in that genre. there is plenty of improvisation in this group, lodder is an interesting contrast to outram. the wide dynamic of the music and playing gives the album contrast and shape.
the song within is an important album and worthy successor to the groups 2 other albums.
the originality of asaf sirkis' vision has hindered this groups acceptance within the u k scene. the bland play with the improvisational freedom of a jazz group, but use the essence of messieans harmonic and metrical language blended with jazz rock's vitality. indeed the music is so free of cliche that many people fail to engage with it, being apparently too reliant on the comforts of jazz's mainstream traditions.
