Lanen Kaelar has dreamed of dragons all her life. But not just dreaming, for Lanen believes in dragons. Her family mocks her that dragons are just a silly myth. A legend. But Lanen knows better. And she means to prove it. One day she sets out on a dangerous voyage to the remote West to find the land of the true Dragons. What she discovers is a land of real dragons more beautiful - and surprising- than any dream she could have imagined.

I have been reading way too much Robert Jordan, because I was absolutely amazed at the pace Elizabeth Kerner maintains while still telling a detailed and multilayered story. And what a refreshing change this was. I think I would happily dive into another book or two of the adventures of Lanen, Akhor (Varien), the Kantri, the Gedri, and various demon interferences. Most impressive are the lyrical and moving exchanges between Lanen and Akhor as they realize the depth and transcendance of their feelings for each other. Yet, this is not just a love is good vs. evil, old vs. new, "us" vs. "them". And the story is not such a fairy tale that all these conflicts are neatly resolved - just as in "real" life, its complicated and messy. Lanen is a true hero, and thank the Lady Shia she's no supermodel! Kudos to Elizabeth Kerner (and to whatever talented individual did the spectacular and evocative cover art!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Read, and you will not regret. 16 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
A tale of love, dragons and courage, written to draw in the reader from the very first. Elizabeth Kerner has the ability to make you care greatly about what fate may befall her characters - all of them. Very certainly worth reading, and far superior to much of the completely predictable fantasy works cluttering up the bookshops... I look forward to the next volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing story 15 Aug 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I am a big fan of the Pern books but this book is by far superior. Elizabeth Kerner has created a central character that is both feisty but also endearing to the reader. I am totally engrossed in this world. I open the book and I'm instantly transported to a world where dragons still live and demons are real.

If you like Anne McCaffrey or Ian Irvine then you will love this book. All I can say to sum up is 'where can I get my own Kantri?'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and original 15 Aug 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a major Pern fan, I have struggled to find anything that is as original as Anne McCaffrey's work for many years. I stumbled accross this book in a kind readers List at the bottom of a random page, and I thank that person with all my heart.

I took this on holiday with a couple of others which sadly were a struggle and left this til last. It was completely amazing.

It is written in a style I have never come across before. Its in the first person but multiple characters. Within a chapter it will state the name of the character narrating. It is quite startling but ultimately refreshing to get the first person viewpoint of every character, even the baddies!

The "Dragons" or Greater Kindred of the Kantrishakrim, are an ancient, sentient, race of peoples living solitary lives on an isle seperated from the rest of the world by a constant raging unpassable storm. On this island grow the ancient Lansip tree's which bear a friut with amazing healing powers and some say the elixr of life. No human has set foot there for many hundreds of years and every ship that has sailed there in that time has never returned. The Kantri have been there for 5000 years! Their existance has slipped into legend among the humans of the main continenet, but one girl, Lanen, has a yearning in her heart that goes beyond mere whim, to find out if the ancient Kantri truely exist. Little does she know that what she seeks is her true destiny, and somewhere there is another heart with as strong a longing...

This is a story of hidden depths and great love. I defy anyone to read this and not fall in love with the richly developed characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful and intriguing book 1 Sep 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Song in the Silence is one of the best books in the science fiction world. Lanen Kaelar, the main character is a unique persona and has a very noble dream. She is courageous and persistant in reaching the island of the dragons, and does not let anyone stop her from reaching it. She faces the evil demons and her malicious father with calmness and strength, and she is patient and understanding with the strange and unknown dragons. The book is wonderfully written with interesting and thoughtful characters and plot developments. Elizabeth Kerner is a superb author and she needs to write many more books, including a sequel to Song In the Silence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great Sci Fi without the blood and guts 6 July 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed this sci fi. It was gentle enough not to turn me off and yet was involving enough that I kept turning the pages. The world it set was believable and the insight from a dragon's view was alot of fun. Humor was generously sprinkled in and thank goodness there were no major battles, invasions or all that other violence that gets so bogged down and boring in many sci fi. If you've read all Anne Mcaffrey works and are looking for more in that stlye this is a book for you. Sequel Please!!!!

In Song of the Silence: The Tale of Lanen Kaelar, Elizabeth Kerner manages to make her world of magic and dragons come alive in a way that makes me wish very much that there WERE dragons in the world. I found myself really caring about her characters, and I was sorry to see the book end.

I find myself really eager to read her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars this book had me dreaming of dragons 19 Aug 1997
By A Customer
OHhhhh this story was amazing. i just loved it. I happened to be looking for another book when i found this one,
and so i instantly plopped down on a comfy seat in my local Barnes and Noble and read they whole thing there in the store.
I didn't have the money to buy it, but i didn't want to put it down. I'm hoping that there will be a sequel to this, hoping and praying,
because i feel there is more to the story of Lanen
and her dragon lover. I'm saving my money and running back to the book store to buy
this wonderful book just so i can have it to reread over and over again.
if you love dragon stories then read this... it's not to be missed.
