Book Description

1 April 2003
In a spellbinding tale that sweeps from a rugged Greek island to the scandal and intrigue of Regency England, bestselling author Katherine Kingsley gives us a man haunted by the past, a woman without a future--and a seduction that begins amid the howling winds of a storm-tossed sea.

Grown to womanhood on the lush Greek island of Corfu, Callista Melbourne reluctantly sails to England to honor part of her father’s dying wish, but is also determined to defy his final request and escape the dreaded fate of an arranged marriage. Before she reaches the shores of England a fierce storm blows her from the deck of the ship and into the sea to face seemingly certain death. Yet here she was now, ensconced in a bedroom in Stanton Abbey, staring into the eyes of a mesmerizing stranger--without the slightest idea of where he’d come from…or of who she was.

To Adam Carlyle, Fifth Marquess of Vale, she was the most captivating creature he had ever pulled from the sea. She called herself Calliope, but he soon uncovered her true identity. To save her from marrying a scheming fortune hunter, the widowed nobleman broke his own sacred vow never to risk his heart again. But how could he protect his new bride from the dangers of his own past…or himself from a scandalous passion that would tempt him to risk everything to answer the call of Callie’s love?

4.0 out of 5 stars invigorating historical romantic suspense 12 April 2003
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1818 Lord Adam Carlyle rows his boat in the Channel planning to die as far from England as possible. The distraught aristocrat's only pleasure is to thwart his odious cousin by delaying the declaration of inheriting Stanton Abbey. However, his rowboat fails to sink even in a nasty storm and though tired he sees a siren sent overboard from a nearby ship. The siren is knocked unconscious but Adam rescues her.

Her father sent Callie Melbourne back to England to meet her fiancé Harold Carlyle selected for her by her dad. Now she awakens in a stranger's home suffering from amnesia. While Adam helps Callie physically heal, she aids him with his mental healing. As they fall in love, his odious cousin Harold recognizes Callie as his fiancé. Adam, who vowed never to love again, risks his soul because his beloved Callie must never be under the thumb of Harold.

SONG FROM THE SEA is an exciting Regency romance though readers will not accept the hero's attempt to commit suicide (sort of like Lethal Weapon I). Adam is too courageous and too contemptible of his cousin to kill himself even though he felt he had nothing to live for when two cherished people recently died. Callie is a delight from the moment Adam sees her as a sea siren while Harold is too nasty to accept as a rival. Still sub-genre fans will appreciate Kaherine Kingsley's invigorating historical romantic suspense.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bland and boring! 10 May 2003
By M. Chandler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Well, I guess I'll be the party pooper in this as yet swinging bash of reviews. I DID NOT like this book. I could barely get past the first chapter, even then I felt no emotional attachment to the characters. I hardley cared weither Adam killed himself or Callie drowned. I apologize to Ms. Kingsley and her fans everywhere, but I have yet to find a book by this author that is readable....skimable at best. Granted, this is not as bad as Lilies on the Lake, who's only redeemable quality was Pip, who I enjoyed as a person, but the whole book was wishy-washy and dull. This one comes in as bland and boring, with very little witt and charm in characters (except Nigel, I did like him) and no warmth or substance in plot (the whole sea gull being her fathers spirit, came across as stupid instead of reassuring and loving. Which was intended, so Callie would know her father was always with her, blah....blah.) I would have liked to laugh alot more through this book, so much more humor could have been found and put into it. It is ment as an charcter driven adventure style novel, but fell flat....Ms. Kingsley should take tips from MJ. Putney or Amanda Quick, two writers who excell at those type of books, and also offer plenty of witt, intelligent banter and sarcasm to tickle anyone's funnybone.

Also, the romance was less then romantic. The love scene, which didn't happen till pg. 221 of a 336 page novel, was cliche at best.....unintresting and tiresome at worst. Granted, no one needs to jump into bed right away. But things could have excellerated a bit faster, with the getting there a tad more steamy and fun.

But, to please the majority, I will stop bashing. Since most Kingsley fans probley would like my head on a platter right about now. All in all, I would not have wasted my money on this book. Except, that I wanted to give the author one more try, but alas.....she failed.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Read 14 May 2003
By Kristi Ahlers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Although in my opinion this story got off to a slow start, and I must admit to questioning whether or not I would eventually care or even like Adam the hero, the book turned out to be an pleasant read. Ms. Kingsley is not afraid to touch on dark subjects, and normally her hero's are dark and tortured. Adam is no exception.

Callie has been bethrothed to an englishman that she has never met. She has lived abroad in Greece, and Italy, but when her father dies, she promises to go to England and meet her gentleman. On her way to her fate, she falls overboard and into the sea, she is rescued by Adam, who is out to sea getting ready to kill himself because he can find no joy in life since the tragic death of his wife and son two years earlier. Adam ends up saving her in more ways then one and Callie returns the favor, and gives Adam another reason to live.

Again this is a moving story that touches are a dark subject (suicide) with characters that are more human then normal romance characters. This story does not have the characters jumping into bed at every turn, and in actuality the love scene comes more towards the end of the story. In my opinion this is a good thing, and allowed the characters to get to know each other, and respond to the attraction that both feel. This is not a light, funny read, but still worth the time it will take to read it.
