Book Description

8 Dec 2011
Their births separated by almost a century...

Rosie Maconochie - a young woman with a dark secret.

Sam - an infantryman fighting to survive on the notorious Western Front.

A chance discovery in an old bookshop seems, at first, quite insignificant. But when Rosie's circumstances take a sudden, terrible turn, her tenuous hold on life is shaken to its roots. Soon she begins to find her journey uncannily mirrored in a manuscript penned by an unknown soldier. Both of them struggling with the issues of mortality and meaning, both staggering helplessly towards breaking point - what awaits them as they go over the top?

5.0 out of 5 stars Triumph over tragedy 18 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback
A Song in the Night (Grosvenor House Publishing) is one of the most inspiring novels I've ever read.
I don't think I have ever finished a book (all 500 pages of it) with such a sense of fulfilment, well-being and happiness. I had shed many tears, and laughed too, as the author took me on a roller-coaster of emotions with her gripping, spell-binding exploration of the meaning of life.
With beautifully-drawn characters woven into a fabulous piece of writing, Julie Maria Peace displays an amazing depth of perception, understanding and experience as she traces the heart-rending accounts of life (and death) in the trenches of World War I alongside the equally powerful story of Rosie Maconochie, set in our time nearly 100 years on.
I guess it's not for the squeamish, but for those like so many of us who are frequently troubled and tormented by suffering and disappointment, and whether there is a God in heaven who cares. You'll find it hard to put down!
I congratulate Julie on having the courage to tackle such a massive subject encompassing tragedy, heartache and abuse as well as love and romance, and ultimate triumph. And she does it with tremendous sensitivity, not to mention delightful humour. I reckon she is Britain's answer to Francine Rivers, a similarly brilliant writer from America.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 16 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book onto my kindle after listening to the author on a local radio station, I was not disappointed. It as a gentle book and very cleverly intertwines the First World War with what is happening to a family today. It teases out the past lives of the central characters and reveals the trauma they have experienced, as well as showing that sometimes we can get relationships wrong - good and bad. If you are looking for a racy read , then this is not the book for you - on the other hand if you are looking for a good read with good old fashioned values then this it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Song in the Night 6 Feb 2012
By mrsh
Format:Paperback
I have really enjoyed reading this book. It's one of those books you can't put down because the storylines keeps you hungry for the next page. There are two periods in our history running alongs side one another in the book. One set in 1917 with the inhumanity of the First World War. The second, modern day 2005. Such a time divide makes the reader wonder how they can relate to each other, but the author entwines the two so skilfully and intelligently that it really works to bring us a fasinating insight into the lives and loves of 2 people who lived approximatley 88 years apart.

I was privileged to read Julie' s manuscript of 'A Song in the Night' prior to publication and found this to be one of the best books I had ever read. It is such a captivating story and so 'unputdownable' - she never lets up on the unique theme - you have to keep reading! Well done Julie Here's to the next book!
