Product Description

Product Description

Initially conceived by Longfellow after reading the works of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, "The Song of Hiawatha" is an epic poem based on the legends of the Ojibway Indians of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The beautiful descriptions of this part of the United States are intertwined with the story of the Native American Hiawatha. From his youth to his marriage, from his daily existence of gathering food to his participation in the traditions of his people, Longfellow weaves a tale of impressive scope in this lyric work. Ultimately, this poem tells the story of the American Indian, including his habitual life, fight for survival, and gradual disappearance at the arrival of white men.

Synopsis

America's most popular nineteenth-century poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow devoted himself to providing his country with a national mythology, poetic tradition and epic forms. Known and loved by generations of schoolchildren for its evocative storytelling, his 1855 classic is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature, combining romance and idealism in an idyllic setting.

Very worthwhile 30 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful poem. I am reading to my nine year old daughter and I cannot explain how spellbinding it is for us both. The explainations I am required to give to explain the text have us communicating to a depth we rarely manage in other day-to-day settings. Like a previous review states, the memories this poem has given us will last forever. If you want to really get in touch with your children, read them this.

Although written in the 1850's The Song of Hiawatha has lost none of it's depth and magic - should be read by children and afdults alike. Enthralling.

The Song Of Hiawatha 29 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
I had heard of Hiawatha but never understood the meaning and depth of this great poem. It is a delight to read and share with anyone from the age of 6 upwards. The story deserves to be read and re-read time and time again. It has many truths and hidden meanings that cannot be ignored. I took great pleasure in reading this book to my 9 year old son whilst explaining it's meanings and reminissing of my own experiences. Although this book is primarily for Americans as it is about their history - it is also a good book on which to ponder for us Brits. The memories of this tale will stay with me and my son for ever.
