4.0 out of 5 stars Is this the same book? 8 Mar 2006
Format:Paperback
The previous reviewer didn't like this book. Fine. I love it, as do others I know. If you like metaphysical novels you may well like it too. Questions of identity, self-discovery, fate, love and religion are all woven through this beautifully written novel. Sylvie Germain is erudite, mystical and tender. Fully deserves the awards she has won. We're all different: one review against; one for. Read it and see for yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please Do Not Waste Your Life With This Book 21 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
This book was chosen for our book club based on a review in the Observer by Sarah Adams which concluded "breathtaking". All seven of us were utterly astonished that such a "breathtaking" work could be such an appalling waste of paper. Please, dear readers, never darken your bookshelves with this diabolical attempt at fiction. It is "merde" in the extreme. Whether this is because the translation is so dire (translator has won prizes! incredibly) or this is just desperately bad, I don't know. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, EVER!
