I'm been waiting to hear this since Sondheim talked about it during an interview with Jeremy Sams at the NT early this year and I've not been disappointed. Inspired by David Kernan's show 'Moving On' that was staged at the Bridwell Theatre to celebrate Sondheim's 70th Birthday, this uses his own observations on his life and career to "hang" the songs on so we hear some un-expected lyrics to well known numbers, including a whole new take on 'Not Getting Married Today' from 'Company', that present them in a new light. We also get fresh takes on old friends, probably the best being (or should I say my favourite) Barbara Cook and Tom Wopat's 'You Could Drive a Person Crazy'. The new song 'God' is, as already mentioned, a Sondheim gem being based around comments made about, and overheard by, him. Indispensible for anyone interested in 20th Century musical theatre and self recommending for Sondheim freaks of which I count myself, unashamably, one of the worst. Thanks god, and when is it opening in London (preferably with Judi Dench if Ms Cook can't come)?

Yes, it's arrived & the wait is over! The new song 'God' which opens the second act of this brilliant compilation show from James Lapine is worth the price of the CD alone; listen and enjoy. Some numbers from the show have been lost through presumably time constraints on this recording, but what remains are in the main new arrangements and top notch performances. The icing(s) on the cake are, of course, the anecdotes and introductions from the Master himself - insightful, life affirming, personal and open. Race for your copy and celebrate the genius.

Sondheim at eighty. Another revue, this one extra special. The great man himself narrates, courtesy of video (he preferring to be set upon by wolves than appear on stage himself).

The result is a joy - frank, witty and moving. Anecdotes are interwoven with his songs, words given a fresh slant because of their new context. Barbara Cook heads the singers who do Sondheim proud, the revue a veritable succession of highlights. There are lots of laughs too ("God", especially written for the occasion; "The Wedding Is Off"; "Franklin Shepard, Inc."; and the only number Sondheim declares autobiographical, "Opening Doors"). There are surprises. The show of which Sondheim is most proud and regards as incapable of improvement? "Assassins" - represented here chillingly by "The Gun Song".

Immensely personal and revealing, Sondheim tells how much he needs to work with people - they become like a family. He himself had been an only child, the early years dire - his mother monstrous and loathed. His saviour was Oscar Hammerstein - substitute father and revered mentor. Without Hammerstein, Sondheim would never have achieved what he has. That touching anecdote at the end emphasizes the bond.

What with this revue and that memorable 2010 Proms special, the eightieth birthday has been celebrated most worthily. The recording ranks as a MUST BUY for all his admirers.

I am a Sondheim addict. I found Sondheim by chance in 1990 when over Christmas, 2 of his musicals were on TV. ("Into the Woods" and "Sunday in the Park with George"). These two musicals defied any idea of "a musical" I had ever experienced before. As a singer, I find his lyrics ironic, witty, humorous and full of emotional truth. His work is highly original and over 50 years, he has produced musicals of amazing variety, subtlety and sophistication. This CD is exceptional in that alongside some of his most striking songs, we have Sondheim himself talking about the creative process and how the commercial musical theatre impacts on what songs get written. The CD gives you the chance to accompany Sondheim on a musical autobiography. It's a "must have" for any afficionados.

It's not often that one laughs out loud on a musical cd, but the the song 'God' had me chuckling with glee. What a brilliant and witty lyric. Sondheim can laugh at himself thank goodness.
Other wonderful revelations were the new scoring of 'Something's Coming' from West Side. It made the song sound new and fresh with a nod to Brian Wilson maybe or the Four Freshmen with the close harmony. How great to hear Barbara Cook singing as well as ever. No one soars like her, or brings such tender melancholy to a song.
If you are a Sondheim fan, you have to have this album. To hear his commentary in between tracks makes you feel as if you are sharing a one to one with the great man.

Sondheim revues aren't exactly thin on the ground - the concept took flight back in the 70s with "Side by Side" but this new recording is an absolutely top-drawer addition. For a start, the performances are pitch-perfect; it seems all involved resist the temptation to over-emote and instead offer cool, balanced readings of some of Mr Sondheim's finest songs, and not necessarily the most well-known. The addition of Barbara Cook to the mix is a splendid notion - her wise, deeply felt interpretations of Sondheim's work are always to be cherished. But the other performers are also marvellous, and every song glows with life and freshness (not easy to achieve in a year which has seen a glut of tributes to this most revered composer).

Sondheim's commentary throughout is a joy, his rather wry sense of humour and his apparent delight in explaining his ideas and motives coming over very well. A final bonus: the orchestrations are simply gorgeous, making special use of a pithy string section which adds to the pensive, probing nature of Mr Sondheim's work.
