Amazon.co.uk Review

Second of the Sevenwaters trilogy of novels about the last days of heroic Ireland, Son of the Shadows takes up the story of the children of Sorcha, who saved her brothers whom a sorceress had enchanted into swans, and Hugh, the Briton she married. Her daughter Liadan is a gifted seer and healer who thinks, in spite of her visions, that she knows what the future has in store for her--caring for her dying mother and then an alliance marriage to Eamonn. A chance meeting on the road carries her off to care for a dying man--one of the mercenaries of the sinister Painted Man, Eamonn's arch-enemy and a killer for hire. Liadan discovers that she cannot choose where she loves and that she and the Painted Man are as bound up in destiny as her mother and father were before her.

This is an intelligent historical romance in which the supernatural is a part of the character's everyday lives to an extent that makes it hard to think of the book as specifically a fantasy--these are people to whom the beings of forest speak on a regular basis and to whom sorcery is real. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

‘I enjoyed it enormously. It is a fantasy, full of the magic of the Celtic night, but it has that wonderful all-important feel of reality… a wonderful, riveting story’ Barbara Erskine
‘This hugely enjoyable, romantic Celtic fantasy is a terrific book, well written and unputdownable’ Bookwatch
‘Filled with the powers of earth and sky, lake and forest… sweet and strong as the note of a harp, and painful as a sword thrust deep… a strong sense of realism… a nicely wrought and well-detailed historical fantasy’ Locus

Practically perfect 19 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Having read and enjoyed the first of the trilogy, Daughter of the Forest, I was eagerly anticipating Son of the Shadows. Amazingly, it is even better than the earlier book, and is utterly unputdownable. They don't come along very often, so when you get the chance to read a book this good, don't hesitate. Some of the moments in it were so perfect, and were described so beautifully it actually made me cry (which is a first!), so I don't advise reading it on the train...

I am actually sad to have finished it, and miss the world and the people that it made so real. Instantly my favourite book of all time, although I think it is important to read Daughter of the Forest first. If you enjoy Stephen Lawhead or David Gemmell, indulge yourself. In fact, read it anyway, you won't be disappointed.

This was an awesome books, full of surprises. You really get into the characters, feel what they feel, see what they see, you become the character. The writing and description in this books is top-notch, all the characters well drawn out. This book is not quite as sad as the first but there are many parts where it makes you feel really sad, at a lost. This book is both a sadness, pain, loss, joy, happiness and love. The stories that are told by the characters are very exciting as well. Sevenwaters is a place where you wished you could make your home, go to the forest and all. You also get to see more of the area and allies of Sevenwaters. You'll be mad to miss this one, highly recommended.

Overall: Excellent drawn out characters, superbly detailed, very good storyline and plots, really plays with your emotions (similar to the Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy in playing with readers emotions). Buy it now, and you will not regret it.

this is an amazing book. i'd strongly advise the reading of the 'daughter of the forest' first.

when read together, one after another, you feel such an incredible sense of time that you will weep.

each of the siblings has such a well developed character that the losses the family feels are felt by yourself. as are their joys.

do not miss this.
