Book Description

Aug 2003
Samuel. Saul. David. Goliath. Jonathan. When we think of 1 & 2 Samuel, these names and the stories that make them memorable generally come to mind. But these narratives are more than mere history. Peter Leithart offers here a typological reading of 1 & 2 Samuel as a unified book. By giving careful attention to the book's literary structures and its patterns of types and antitypes, Leithart unveils the symbolic world of Samuel's cumulative and cohesive story. His reading enhances our understanding of New Testament Christology while at the same time giving us a framework for applying the Old Testament to our own lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome Commentary 6 Aug 2013
By D. Randle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Peter Leithart has the best 1&2 Samuel (as well as 1&2 Kings) commentary available today. This should be in every Pastor's library. If you want to really preach Christ from the Old Testament and show your people how Christ fulfilled the types and shadows of the OT, which themselves often typified earlier Biblical personalities and storylines, then get this commentary and preach through 1&2 Samuel. Never again will you want to preach a sermon about how David can inspire you to "Face Your Giants" - instead you will want your folks to see how David is a picture of God's Future Chosen King leading His people in destroying an enemy they could never defeat on their own. Bottom Line: Just buy this commentary! You won't need another one (except maybe Dale Ralph Davis's - it's pretty good too).

5.0 out of 5 stars Through the lens of an ancient Jew 16 Aug 2011
By Joshua Smith - Published on Amazon.com
This is not your run of the mill commentary by any means. Leithart seems to draw a lot of Hebraisms from the text that technical commentaries often miss because of the Western induced historical-critical method that has been passed down since the Reformation (obviously it began with the heavy recognition of literal meaning to shift away from the Aristotelian hermeneutics of the 'School Men' of the Roman Catholic Church).

He often makes 'tasty' typological observations that should not be discounted easily. He also draws upon the text to give applications to the church of today.

I am giving this 5 stars simply because there is nothing else like it I've come across whilst studying 1 Samuel. I still think any serious Bible student or pastor should get their hands on Tsumura because of his brilliance in regards to the Hebrew language and for a more technical understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intellectually satisfying and useful commentary 15 Mar 2014
By J. Butter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Leithart's commentary on Samuel is intellectually satisfying, with detailed explanations of cultural, history and language. At the same time, it is very useful, providing plenty of ideas for application. It reads like a narrative, but gives plenty of analysis. This book helped me to appreciate the truth and power of the Bible even more. I will be reading more of Leithart's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Working On It But.... 30 July 2013
By Virgil Hurt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am preaching through Samuel and find Leithart's book extremely helpful. I am still working through A Son To Me but thus far it has fully met my Leithartian expectations. Great insights into various levels of typology and sound exegesis.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the Kindle version 21 Sep 2013
By Lee Grossman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just ordered the Kindle version today and disregarded the other reviewers warning. But he is right the Kindle formatting is very difficult to read and not worth the money. I don't understand how this happens. I own many Kindle books and have not had this issue. Thus, I did not believe the previous reviewers warning. I believe the content is of good quality but you would not know it because the Kindle version is so difficult to read. Now I must purchase the paperback edition.
