Product Description

Product Description

Somewhere to Start from. . . In this anthology of 21 short stories, some published, some prizewinning, and some making their first appearance in print, an eclectic host of characters discover no matter where life takes them, it's only ever somewhere to start from. A lonely sales rep experiences a life-changing revelation, a retiring deity looks back on his achievements, and a concerned father struggles with his teenage daughter's growing independence. In other stories, an underground hotel holds a terrifying secret, a student feels the sting of unrequited love, and Godzilla and King Kong argue over a pizza.

I love that the stories in this book cover such a wide range of themes, styles and emotions. Some stories - as with all collections by one author - are more engaging and more beautifully written than others, but the order they've been collected in is just as much an art as the writing and it works so well. "One Street Corner Too Soon" is stunning - a perfect way to end a great book.

This collection contains nearly a dozen stories that have won or been shortlisted in competitions, others that have been published in reputable places such as Writers' Forum magazine, and a few that we have the pleasure of seeing for the first time. Let's hope it's a first collection of many.

It's hard to characterise these highly entertaining stories, some of which fall distinctly into the microfiction bucket, except to say that Dan Purdue brings a witty and original approach to each of them - and the effect can be lasting. For example, in the months since I read this book it's been hard to read a restaurant review without the sheer pretentiousness of Xtcokpøt coming to mind. Or to see a plane from which parachuters are leaping without recalling ... well, if you read this book you'll discover that gem too.

I attended a writing workshop by Dan Purdue at Guernsey Literary Festival, where he read us a selection of stories from this Anthology. This book includes such a range of quirky, entertaining stories, you cannot help but smile reading them. Standout stories for me are, 'Changeover Day' (where God is asked why he created Dinosaurs), 'A Night In With 'Zil' (Like the Odd Couple but with King Kong and Godzilla sharing a flat) and 'One Street Corner Too Soon'.
Thank you to this up and coming author for producing such a range of well written, entertaining stories.
