What we have here is a lost classic from the "Madchester" years,
A fantastic prelude to the 90s melodic anthemic indie pop , a lost gem....!!!

Lost but maybe not quite a classic.,

I love the CD. It's got BOX SET GO which is a great song. The rest aren't as catchy but still good UK pop. The members of Flag of Convenience, Andy Couzens (guitar) and Chris Goodwin (drums) met and joined with vocalist John Matthews and bassist Simon Davies to form the High in 1987. Couzens was earlier in the Stone Roses. If you like Stone Roses, Smiths, Judy Bats, or the Housemartins then maybe you'll find this CD to your liking. I have a feeling though that you wouldn't be here if you hadn't heard BOX SET GO somewhere and yes....it was worth it for me to buy the cd JUST for that song. The rest follows nicely.

Listened to "Somewhere Soon" for the first time in a few years--it's still a great album;one of my favorites.Very melodic, think of Stone Roses or maybe Charlatans. Favorite song is "Rather Be Marsanne," but there are honestly no bad songs on this. All the songs seem to tie together and flow from one to the next--no obvious singles mixed with filler. Give it a listen. Should have been huge.

Worth finding,

The High's debut album was vastly underappreciated but is an awesome britpop album. If you like the early poppier Stone Roses ("she bangs the drums", "elephant stone", "going down", "bye bye badman"), early Charlatans UK (Some Friendly-era), Thousand Yard Stare, and other 1990's britpop/Madchestor bands, you should check this album out. There are at least 4 or 5 GREAT songs, including "Box Set Go", "Take your time" and my absolute favorite, "Up and Down", the best Stone Roses song that never was a Stone Roses song.
You should be able to find this cd used at many places-- it's worth tracking down. It remains one of my favorites! |
