At Cath’s house, there is safety in numbers as well as a place to hide. No matter what trouble comes to her door, she won’t turn anyone away – because she knows what it’s like to live with secrets. But now a problem from her past has come back to haunt her, and she’s the one faced with a dilemma. What should she do first – help or be helped? Or has the potential for revenge already gone a step too far?

About the Author

Mel Sherratt has been a self-described "meddler of words" ever since she can remember. More About the Author

I write police procedurals, psychological suspense and fiction with a punch - or grit-lit, as I call it. Shortlisted for the prestigious CWA (Crime Writer's Association) Dagger in Library Award 2014, my inspiration comes from authors such as Martina Cole, Lynda la Plante, Mandasue Heller and Elizabeth Haynes.

TAUNTING THE DEAD is part police procedural/part psychological thriller. It has been a standalone for two years but I have now written two more books with Detective Sergeant Allie Shenton as a main character, creating a new series. FOLLOW THE LEADER will be out in February 2015 and ONLY THE BRAVE in Summer 2015.

THE ESTATE SERIES are a mix of psychological suspense and crime thriller. They are too light in places for crime thrillers, and often not enough for the psychological suspense readers out there. They are drama meets crime.

WATCHING OVER YOU is a standalone psychological thriller. It's dark in places, light in places, disturbing in places too - where obsession and friendship turns to murder.

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer) and makes liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for some of my books. You can find out more at my website or I'm on Twitter at @writermels

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping and entertaining thriller! 27 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Another cracker from the wonderful author that is Mel Sherratt!

Cathy is widowed, not yet 40, and takes in people who need somewhere to live in her "safe" house. Liz is married to Kevin who constantly uses and abuses her even thought they have a child together called Chloe. When Liz realises that enough really is enough, her and Chloe are moved to Cathy's safe house which she is currently sharing with troublesome Jess.

On the same day that Liz turns up, so does Becky, a young girl with a secret and although they know she has run away from somewhere and someone, she won't tell anyone. Cathy's house is on the Mitchell estate, one side of the estate is where people who like to look after themselves live, with their good jobs, nice gardens and well tended to houses. The other half is full of trouble, unemployed, burnt out cars, run down houses and people who really don't care about themselves or anyone else for that matter.

Austinis a young man who is planning a big surprise for someone on his 21st birthday. But who is that surprise for and why?

I was first introduced to Mel's writing last year when I read Taunting the Dead. Once again in this book, her writing is exciting, gripping and mesmerising and I was quickly lost to the real world, deeply engrossed in the story. I could definitely see her books being portrayed in a TV series but I haven't chosen the characters yet!

You get stuck into the plot very quickly and totally immersed with the goings-on in this gritty tale of life on a tough estate. The characters are hard and you really wouldn't mess with them. Cathy was a really strong main character, likeable, gutsy and brave sticking up for the girls in her care, helping them to achieve something in their lives and not take any crap from anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Star Entertainment With An Explosive Climax 15 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I like to think that I've a broad range of tastes; I'm equally at home with La Boheme as I am with an episode of X Factor and Mel Sherratt's Somewhere To Hide is Coronation St to another book I reviewed this week Mountains Of The Moon's Othello. Following on from her highly successful Taunting The Dead - a police thriller set in Stoke On Trent, Somewhere To Hide has been described by the author as "Grit Lit" and I think that's a very good description.

The "somewhere to hide" of the title is both a derelict pub where the novel opens as a psycho predator instals himself waiting for a date with his destiny in August and a safe house for young women run by the matronly and amiable Cathy. She takes in teenage runaways Jess and Becky and battered wife Liz and the novel charts their experiences on the notorious Mitchell estate in an anonymous city somewhere in northern England in the time running up to the aforementioned date with destiny.

Mel Sherratt writes in good plain English which is compelling to read and she has the rare knack of making the reader want to turn the page. There's an element of chick-lit in there with the customary girly get togethers complete with cushion throwing, wine drinking and appreciating a fine pair of male buttocks. There is an underlying love story in the background alongside the stories of several troubled lives as the younger girls are dragged into a seedy underworld, Liz is stalked by her battering husband and Cathy lives with a harrowing secret looming over her.

It's a very good read and certainly five star entertainment as the story builds into an explosive climax.

After reading Mel Sherratt's first book Taunting the Dead I could not wait to read her Second book Somewhere to Hide (The Estate. Book 1). I have to say this book had me gripped from the first page. The characters almost became real, I'm not sure how else to discribe it but I felt so involved in the story and really cared about how they felt and what happened, without giving any of the story away I laughed one min and felt like crying the next! This is a beautiful story that gets right to the heart of the matter and makes you really think about life and the choices we make. I can honestly say this is one of the most involving, well written, emotional books I have ever read and can not wait for book 2 to be released. Buy this book you will not be dissapointed but be prepared for one hell of a roller coster ride! It's a gem I wish I could give it 10 stars!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep an eye on this very gifted writer 13 Oct. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book kept me gripped to the very end. At times I felt really worried for the terribly vulnerable girl Becky and had to keep reminding myself that this was only a story - but of course that is the secret of writing a truly great story. I am so looking forward to being able to read her next story "Behind A Closed Door" which apparently is due to be available sometime this month (October 2012). Keep up the great work Mel.
