Beautiful. Compelling. Diverse.
Stories range from haunting fantasy, to paranormal detectives, to war stories.
Although I had my favorites, there isn't a bad story in here.

Diverse and excellent stories

I don't think I've ever read such a diverse sele3ction of stories by a single author. They ranged from very literary and poetic (including one poem), to straightforward in styles, but all were worth reading. (And I say that as someone who is not usually a fan of elliptical prose!)
It's best, I think, when the dreaminess and literary aspects come in the service of a strong plot, and there were several such stories here. I particularly liked "The World Without Sleep", with its angels, truly original vampires, goblins, and shadows, and a nice, complex plot.
If you like Monette's writing, you will love this collection!

A taste that makes you want more

I have been a huge fan of Sarah Monette since I discovered "Melusine" and its sequels (ahhh . . . delight . . .) some years ago, but I have never cared much for short stories. I like to delve deeply into worlds, and the average short story is over just about the time it gets interesting. But BECAUSE "Somewhere Beneath Those Waves" was written by Sarah Monette I took a chance on it and made it my first purchase for my Nook. It is possible that she will make me change my views on stories. Or maybe, just maybe, she'll take pity on those of us who love her darkly inventive fiction and will turn some of these stories into full-length books. The story "Seance at Chisholm End" introduces a pair of intensely interesting characters, plain beleaguered Harriet Winterbourn who toils as a paid companion to a miserable woman, and the "remarkably ugly little man" who calls himself Doctor Venefidezzi and earns his living as a medium. By the time they flee together down a dark road toward the train station I was absolutely hooked on their story and wanted to know more. One banished from the great house and the other fired without a reference from her position, yet the reader just KNOWS that irresistable adventures lay ahead of them. I hope she will write more about them. Monette could make an entire book about "Katabasis: Seraphic Trains" (what a chillingly dark and beautiful world she has created!), or "Amante Doree" as well. Until or unless Monette expands on some of these teasers I'll have to settle for delicious little bits and tastes in this volume of 25 stories. Or re-read again the tales of Felix the disgraced magician and Mildmay Fox in "Melusine", or go back still one more time to "A Companion to Wolves" which still holds the place of honor as 'best romance that is NOT a romance' in my many years of reading experience. Don't stop writing Sarah!
