Product Description

Product Description

CORNERSTONE is a Rock band that hails from Austria. The band consists of Patricia Hillingeron lead vocals), Michael Wachelhofer on bass and keyboards, Steve Wachelhofer on guitar, and Mike Pawlowitsch on drums and percussion. They released their debut album, "Head Over Heels", in 2008, and the band did numerous tours of Europe and America. They, also, participated in the UK based Z Rock Festival in 2009. Some of the songs from Head Over Heels were included in the motion-picture soundtrack for the film Little Alien, which was shown in cinema and will be on television in the near future. Cornerstone won the Next Big Thing Contest, sponsored by Alternative Addiction, in March 2008 and had a No. 1 hit on Chungaradio Statesides. The band's sound is pure 80's blended Rock stuff with a, sometimes, harder edged 'modern' Rock. "Stay" which opens the album has a really nice riffing, a solid rhythm and Patricia Hillinger's passionate vocal lines. "Rise And Shine" has a 'modern' vibe in it but it's an overall good track. "Breathing For You" is simple brilliant. It's a mellower tune with a nice melody and reminds me a bit the 80's Pop-Rock band's. A superb track. "Right Or Wrong" continues in the mid-tempo rhythm. Another excellent sample from "Somewhere In America". Patricia Hillinger's really shines on this one! In "Like A Stranger" the tempo gets harder this time. A nice track with a solid hook and chorus line. "Follow You, Follow Me" is a very good 'modern' rock track while "Being Unaware" is a killer rock song and the perfect track to drive in an open high-way with the volume on 10.

Review

The whole CD sounds very strong and in the end the band took me by surprise with this great CD release that is highly recommended to any fan of female fronted AOR/Poprock! --Strutter Zine

Rock, Pop and Indie with a big dose of AOR, big guitars and big vocals, destined for US Airplay. A solid slice of melodic rock people, get addicted! --Big Cheese

Cornerstone caught my attention with their excellent material, an unusual focus on arrangement details, and progressive melodic hooks…sounds like the the recipe for a hit to me! --Beau Hill, Producer (Alice Cooper, Winger, Europe,…), U.S.A.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong and soulful melodic rock with female vocals 8 Dec 2012
By Justin G. - Published on Amazon.com
Just to clarify, this is not the now-dormant Danish band Cornerstone that featured Doogie White and Steen Mogensen. This Cornerstone is an Austrian band that plays a brand of melodic rock that's somewhere between AOR and alternative rock. The band returned in 2011 with Somewhere in America, the follow-up to their very impressive 2008 debut Head Over Heels.

Cornerstone has such an interesting sound. They've got one foot in melodic rock territory, appearing at the 2009 Z Rock Festival alongside AOR mainstays like John Waite and and Ted Poley, but they'd also be right at home on college radio. There's a lot to Cornerstone's sound that's reminiscent of the `90s alternative bands like Belly and Throwing Muses, but they also recall The Pretenders and even 10,000 Maniacs at times.

Somewhere in America (a title inspired by their brief US tour, perhaps?) continues along the same path as Head Over Heels, though there's one very noticeable change. Previous vocalist Anja Schirmer has been replaced by Patricia Hillinger. Hillinger's voice is similar to Schirmer's, though perhaps a bit deeper and more soulful, which is definitely a plus given the personal and emotional nature of the lyrics. The album shifts from alternative ("Breathing for You") to commercial ("Right or Wrong") and back, but the gorgeous melodies and sheer emotion running throughout gives Somewhere in America a cohesive atmosphere that's easy to relate to and hard to resist.

If you're one of the lucky few who picked up Cornerstone's debut, you will not be disappointed by Somewhere in America at all. If you're new to the band, but have an appreciation for melodic rock and an open mind, Cornerstone should prove a very pleasant surprise. This is a band that has a huge crossover potential. You listen to an album like Somewhere in America and can absolutely imagine them being profiled on NPR. Hopefully they'll get the attention their music deserves.
