This is a review of Dating In The Dark: sometimes love just pretends to be blind by Pete Sortwell
This is a great book - well written, very funny, and very believable, on so many levels.
The main character, Jason, clearly suffers from low self-esteem, and I don't just mean because he is only just above legal midget height.
He is desperate for love, but has been very unsuccessful. He believes this is because he is ugly and short, and not because of his amazingly self-centred personality. So he decides that the only option he has is to seek love by dating a blind person.
Put like that, you might think that there is no basis for comedy to be found in the disability of another. You would be WRONG!! This book is hilarious, almost from start to finish. Some of the hilarity is based on the lead character's clearly inept chat-up technique, some of it on the chat between Jason and his friend Barry, which is just spot-on, and some of it on the absurdity of the situations which Barry finds himself in.
Just enjoy it.
This is a review of Bride And Gloom: sometimes love is better off blind. (A Laugh Out Loud Comedy Sequel)
This book is the sequel to [=Dating In The Dark=] and again features Jason Harding, short of stature, and also short of self-esteem, as well as a host of characters, some of whom were also featured in the first book, but also introducing Neil, a psychotic relation of Jason's blind soon-to-be bride.
This book tells the story up to and including the wedding, but the action is mainly set around the stag do, which is to be held in Liverpool.Read more ›
I've read a couple of this authors work now and this one is as different as the others, but just as funny. The story meets Jason at a time in his life where he is literally desperate to find love. The situations he's been are somewhat tragic although his ideas to snare a woman are no less sad. Once it pays off he finds him self in deep water, which for someone as short as Jason is terrifying. He gets a girl the trick is can he keep her? I won't put any spoliers in this review, Ill just say that the story has a lovely message to it and along with a cracking plot this book made me laugh at least once every page.I've read a couple of this authors work now and this one is as different as the others, but just as funny. Bride and Gloom
I enjoyed this book, it's a good follow up from the first. Jason doesn't change too much. He's still a miserable so and so. I suppose that's why it's called bride and gloom.
The real gems are Boris and Neil - i hope my stag do won't be quite as adventurous though!!
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Pete's books!!
