4.0 out of 5 stars The record's background 3 Aug 2014
By Jack Melmoth - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Unfortunately the previous reviews say nothing about the music. The following quote from the Arhoolie Records site may be of help:

"A spontaneous live recording by blues and folk singer Barbara Dane with Houston, Texas blues icon Lightning Hopkins during an afternoon gathering at Berkeley's legendary coffee house, the Cabale, in the early 60's, with Barbara on acoustic and Lightning on electric guitars.
The first half of this CD is Lightning and Barbara improvising on the spot, while the second half is comprised of Barbara performing classic blues and other songs, with Ray Skjelbred playing piano on most. These selections reflect Barbara's social consciousness at the time, including a superb rendition of Woody Guthrie's moving "Deportees (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)."

All previously unreleased, except #1, 2, 4, 7 and 17 which appeared on ARH LP 1022."

5.0 out of 5 stars two of the legends of the folk scene 29 Aug 2009
By Warren E. Leming - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Barbara Dane used to work the Gate of Horn in Chicago, and the folk spots in between. She was a superb Blues singer, and a fine guitarist who brought an "authenticity" to her Blues that set her a long way from Blues imitators... she was a complete original. Political, musical, edgy and intense: there was no one like her then or now. She was married for a time to Rolf Cahn, the Cambridge, Mass scene maker and guitarist cum guru who made Boston a hot spot on the early sixties folk map.
Hopkins remains simply the greatest of the Texas style Blues guitarists... his vocals are an amazing complement to one of the great American Blues guitar styles: a complete original whose true worth has never completely measured.
Put these two together, and you have more than you bargained for...
