I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful account of Christopher Bulteel's experiences in the Second World War. The author describes his time in North Africa and during the Salerno landings in Italy. This very personal book is more about the person rather than events. Bulteel has a wonderful control of the English language and I found the book very easy to read - in fact, hard to put down! I found myself liking the man immensely as he portrays himself as a very humble but brave man - a reluctant hero who is continually surprised by the friendship and bravery he inspired in his colleagues. The book is very funny in parts and desperately sad in others. I would recommend it to all those interested in WWII history as well as those interested in how to write a really good book.
