5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 8 Feb 2004

You probably need to have known Kenya to fully appreciate this book. I am fortuneate to have visited, worked and lived in this beautiful country and 'Something Of Value' is, I think, a wondeful tale. Above all I think that Ruark's descriptions of the bush are unequalled. A bygone era that this book still evokes poingnantly for me. I have heard people ctiticise it as melodramatic but so what?! This is ultimately entertainment and it succeeds magnificantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be patient and it's worth it, 13 Sep 2003
By Nick Robinson (WALLINGTON, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Well, the subject of this review basically sums up my feelings about this book. Ruark has managed to express feelings in this story that when finished will make you remember the characters as if you were there with them. As you will know from reading the introduction the book is centred between two childhood friends who end up on opposite sides in a brutal war between the British trying to "civilize" and the traditional Mau-Mau. Rarely do books show the point of view from both sides with such consideration that it's hard to decide who is right or wrong. As has been said previously, there are moments when this book is hard going but what makes it all worthwhile is the reflection you have when, last page turned, you can think about what you've read and know it will stay with you forever.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life: from beautiful to brutal - A monumental work!, 4 Aug 1997
By A Customer

They don't get any better than this. Ruark redefines the novel in this tale of lives bound up in Kenya's struggle for freedom. The last generation of English colonialism meets the first generation of free Kenya, who have nothing left to lose in their struggle.

It is all here: the African bush, the 'Safari' life, the strength of people both black and white, passion, adventure, pain and joy.

If this book doesn't move you, then nothing will. It is an 'eleven'! I first read it about 15 years ago, and plan to re-read it annually!

Kurt Wagner, Hawthorne NJ
