"The Ruts" achieved a modicum of success in the latter part of the original punk era, with their Top 20 hit "Babylon's Burning", and some storming life performances.... This compilation wisely concentrates on the early material of the band. In fact, it's basically the first album, "The Crack", plus their first single, "In a Rut", and a handful of other tracks. The music is what punk was meant to be all about; blistering songs such as "Criminal Mind" are perfectly juxtaposed by reggae influenced compositions such as "Jah War". The lyrics and music are passionate throughout, with a fairly political bent.
It would be easy to dismiss "The Ruts" as a poor man's "The Clash", but they came up with some fine songs of their own, and this collection is well worth buying.
