I thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Webb's novel 'Something to talk about'. Sarah has gone from strength to strength with each new novel, establishing herself as one of Ireland's special talents in modern irish womens fiction. The storyline is entertaining and witty. Her charachters interesting and engaging. Sarah Webb's ever climbing sales figures confirms her place in an ever increasingly competitive market. Well done to the author for delivering another hit.

Tired and formulaic 30 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback
There are times when I think Jane Austen has a lot to answer for - Emma was a good read but its plot - man and woman are best friends, woman tries to set up man with a friend but realises in the end she wants him for herself - has now become a staple of chicklit literature. In case you fail to predict the outcome of this novel, the references to 'When Harry met Sally' on the back cover, and the references to 'Emma' within the story make it pretty clear what direction this is going to take. The plot is pretty straightforward - Max and Lucy have known each other for years but are best friends NOT an item, do quirky things like fly kites together (yawn) are essentially boyfriend and girlfriend without the romance. (Does anyone actually KNOW a heterosexual man and woman who behave like this? I don't but maybe I should just get out more often). Clearly they should get together but then there wouldn't be a novel, so there has to be all sort of diversions - other love interests for them both, a host of 'zany' minor characters, dreary distractions such as a 'Sound of Music singalong' and a dating show, all of which are completely pointless and do nothing to move the story along. Worst of all Lucy the 'heroine' is such a a whiney selfish character that I had zero sympathy for her (especially after I found that she hadn't spoken to her father in years, long after she should be over her parents breakup); to me she was the sort of character who deserves her comeuppance rather than a happy ending. The books fizzles out in the end, when the author suddenly implies a sexual chemistry between the two leads which had seemed notably absent throughout the book and forces her characters away from other more interesting relationships into a formulaic ending which feels totally fake. It reminded me of virtually every other chicklit book I've ever read and worse done than most. Her other books were ok but she's definitely running out of ideas now and I certainly won't be buying any of her other books.

Wonderful 4 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
I have to admit I'm a big fan of Sarah Webb's work. Her books are light, easy reading - just perfect for cosy nights in by the fire or relaxing by the beach on holiday.

This one is just as good as Always the Bridesmaid or Three Times a Lady. The main character Lucy is very engaging and I think Sarah also has a wonderful way of portraying children in her novels, particularly in this one. They are always so cute and adorable, you almost want to pick them up!

Something to Talk About is a lovely, cosy fun read - another hit from Sarah Webb. Well done!
