Product Description

Kool & The Gang need no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 70's and 80's having sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as 'Summer Madness', 'Get Down On It', 'Celebration' and who could forget that slammin funk monster that features so heavily in Quentin Tarantinos cult flick - Pulp Fiction; 'Jungle Boogie'. Singles featured on 'Something Special' include 'Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)' which shot to the top of the U.S. R&B chart while gaining top 20 spots on both the U.S. Pop and Dance charts while later achieving a top 30 position in the U.K. 'Get Down On It' followed and did even better landing at #10 U.S. Pop, #4 in the R&B charts and better still in the U.K. attaining a #3 position. Beyond that 'Get Down On It' has gone on to become one of the bands most instantly recognizable hits. Kool & The Gangs chart success didnt stop there; 'Steppin' Out' also went on to chart, landing an impressive #12 spot on both the U.S. R&B chart and U.K. singles chart.

Another quality BBR re-issue showcasing the talents of a great band. Worth buying to get the album tracks that did not get a single release, some of which are very good.

This series of Kool & The Gang import reissues are excellent -
nice remastering (no loudness war nonsense) and lots of
appropriate bonus tracks, as well as new liner notes.
Something Very Special 29 Aug. 2014
By Alex Litvak - Published on Amazon.com
Kool and the Gang released “Something Special” in 1981 after scoring two back to back Platinum albums and 3 Top 10 hits. Previous years “Celebration” became somewhat of an anthem. Expectations ran high for “Something Special” and the results did not disappoint. Eumir Deodato retained his production duties and while his third collaboration with Kool and the Gang was not a big departure from the two previous efforts, the results nonetheless make a worthy listen. Why mess with a winning formula?

The album opens with “Steppin’ Out”, a dance track that borrows from 1979’s “The Second Time Around” by Shalamar. In spite of the similar groove and sound, “Steppin’ Out” is a pleasant feet shuffler and became an R&B and Club Hit. “Good Time Tonight” continues the good time feel of the album. “Get Down On It” keeps the party going and became an across the board Top 10 smash. Mid tempo gem “Take My Heart” became a further Top 10 R&B, Pop and Club hit, elevating “Something Special” to Platinum status. “Be My Lady” is another killer dance track that received club play. “Stand Up and Sing” moves the party along and could have easily become a Top 10 Pop and R&B hit had it been released as a single.

Kool and the Gang displayed their mastery with up tempo Dance tracks but the band truly shines on killer ballads. “Pass It On” is a sexy slow jam that can draw comparisons to Change’s “Sharing Your Love” but thanks to James J.T. Taylor’s warm soulful vocals, this groove shines in its own right. The album closes with “No Show”, another killer slow gem that further highlights Kool and the Gang’s versatility and Taylor’s talent as a vocalist. Why “No Show” was not released and promoted as a single is a mystery since it is a perennial Quiet Storm classic that never was.

Big Thanks to Big Break Records for re-mastering “Something Special”. As is customary with any BBR re-master, the sound is crisp, the liner notes are informative and there are 7 Bonus tracks here. “Steppin’ Out”, “Get Down On It” and “Take My Heart” are presented here in their hard to find 12” Mix Versions and are also available here in their Single versions. “Stop”, a rare non-album track previously unavailable on cd, is also made available here and it’s a funky instrumental. The album’s original album cover art front and back is preserved as well. A must have for any Disco/R&B lover and collector.
