Product Description
Shocking all of Venice, Missouri, when she bobs her hair, Gertrude Barkley is secretly admired from afar by Polish immigrant and successful businessman Mikolai Stefanski, until a scandalous misunderstanding brings them together.

Gertrude Barkley, unmarried and unapologetic, had already caused a lot of talk in Venice, Missouri, with her independent ways and her book-writing career. But when she bobbed her waist-length hair, the town gossips had a field day…
Mikolai Stefanski didn’t know what all the fuss was about. In fact, he rather liked Gertrude’s daring new look. A proud Polish immigrant, who had managed to become Venice’s most successful businessman, Mikolai had always admired Gertrude’s rebellious spunk-if only from afar. After all, he believed in doing things his own way, too – though he wasn’t quite as flamboyant about it.

They had lived in the same sleepy town for a long time. But it would take a scandalous discovery-and a wild misunderstanding-to make them appreciate each other in a whole new way …

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming -- a lovely read 11 Oct 2009
By K. Halverson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
For a refreshing change, the characters in this book are not stunning exemplars of physical beauty. In fact, they are two neighbors past the first bloom of youth. Mikolai is a widower who is raising his son alone and Gertrude is a single, quasi-independant 'spinster'...and together they decide to assuage their loneliness since they've always enjoyed each other's company -- and there's always been a certain something between them.

The interactions between them are refreshingly adult and without the overblown, breathless prose that detracts from character development. Mikolai and Gertrude are well drawn, sympathetic characters and the romance between them treats them as real people...and demonstrates a respect for the reader that I appreciated.

The -only- reason that I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is because of a sort of sub-plot of a diary that Gertrude's niece finds that produces a bit of a ridiculous misunderstanding... but other than that, this story does not miss its mark.
5.0 out of 5 stars Every Book is better than the last 24 Mar 2013

I've recently discovered Pamela Morsi and love her books. This was actually better than it sounded. Early Americana, Interesting history, background, love some sizzle too. I'm always sad when I finish them as it is hard to get into another book. As I've written before, if you liked, LaVyrle Spencer, you'll love Pamela Morsi.
