5.0 out of 5 stars gripping, 18 April 2006
This review is from: Something in the Sea (Paperback)
I've never felt moved to post an online review before, but this humdinger of a novel deserves to be read by as many people as possible. From the opening sequence to the disturbing ending, Bonavero builds an uneasy tension that keeps the reader in his thrall.

Whilst the suspense is relentless, the novel also contains a poignant love story. This is what makes the book unique - the two genres are interwoven to create a powerful, moving whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Debut, 6 April 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Something in the Sea (Paperback)
"Somthing in the Sea" is the first book by a new author, Yves Bonavero.

It was recommended to me by an editor friend - apparently it has had the publishing industry buzzing.

I was not disappointed- this is a gripping read, the kind of book you may end up reading in one sitting. Be prepared for a ferocious denouement!

I have no intention of spoiling the suspense-filled plot for any future reader, but I can say that the author wastes no time in drawing us into a web of growing tension. Much of the novel is set at sea (as the title suggests!) and barely 20 pages in I already found myself in the midst of a terrible mediterranian storm, brought vivdly to life by a crisp nautical prose. Thereafter the novel takes one twist after another, as we delve into the dark pasts of the various protagonists.

The charactisation is outstanding. One character in particular, the ghostly Kurt (draw your own conclusions about the choice of name), will stay with you long after you finally put the book down.

Not for the fainthearted - a magnificent debut novel.

Enjoy!

I should have put it down and spent the afternoon playing with my young children in the sun, but in the end I found it impossible to do so, and so guiltily gulped this fantastic read down in one sitting. Wonderful, buy it.
