Format: Audio CD
This was Ornette Coleman's debut recorded for Lester Koenig's CONTEMPORARY label in Los Angeles on February 10/22 & March 24, 1958.
Ornette was playing his white plastic alto saxophone with trumpeter Don Cherry, the underrated pianist Walter Norris, bassist Don Payne & drummer Billy Higgins.
All nine Ornette compositions are memorable especially 'Jayne' dedicated to his wife, 'The Blessing' & 'When Will The Blues Leave?'.
It's difficult to understand what all the fuss was about when this album first came out as this striking & swinging music has connections with bop and the blues and is full of life and energy.
Although not as great as his ATLANTIC recordings, 'Something Else!!!!' still sounds fresh over 50 years later and deserves a place in any modern jazz collection.

You May Want to Get "Somethin' Else" 10 Dec. 2011
By Michael Brad Richman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"Somethin' Else" might have been a good start for Ornette Coleman's recording career, but it is not the best place to start your Ornette Coleman CD collection. The tunes are good, and 3/4 of his classic Atlantic quartet (Ornette, Don Cherry and Billy Higgins) are present, but the album lacks musical cohesion. This is laregly due to the inclusion of piano in the group. While Paul Bley may have been able to accompany Ornette on some level, Walter Norris does not, and piano in general was not well-suited to Ornette's music. In fact, I'm not sure he ever recorded with a piano player again until nearly forty years later with Geri Allen on the "Sound Museum" sessions. Ornette fans will certainly want to get this, but others should have a dozen other Ornette CDs under their belt before this one.

Wonderful Debut as Bandleader! 1 Feb. 2012
By Peter Lorenz Artle - Published on Amazon.com

Every time I hear this album it just automatically puts a smile on my face.
As much as I'm a fan of Coleman's more Avantgard style, this album is certainly a must for any Ornette Coleman collection. It is fun to hear Coleman with a piano, which is not common on his albums, and Don Cherry (pocket trumpet)certainly rocks on this record as he does on all those early recordings with Ornette. Absolutely one of my favorite records period!
