Recorded in Chicago, Something Mental captures Tiernan's boundless energy taking his audience on a journey through what the British press called, "the devilish wonderland of his mind."

There are some funny observations on relationships, religion, being Irish and breaking into the comedy scene in the U.S.A.
My problem with Tommy Tiernan's stories is that i feel most of them are made up. He confessed to this on the extras of his previous (Live) dvd. He also confessed to be greatly influenced by Billy Connelly, and maybe thats where Tiernan inherits his annoying habits.

Those habits include laughing before the punch line of a joke, and shouting the punch line in an attempt to make it funnier !! It does not work; it is quite annoying. His 'stories' smack of absurdity but they are only quite amusing. Something Mental CD features Tommy's short 1-hour long performance.

As a fan of Dylan Moran, Doug Stanhope and Dara O'Brian, i find Tiernan to be a one trick pony who spent the last 10 years flogging the same show getting cockier and cockier as he went on. At a show three years ago I was surprised how poor Tiernan was. He had little connection with the audience, and ignored all heckles (A true comedian takes a heckler and through wit & intelligence shows him up as an idiot). He spent his time shouting at us as if giving us some lecture and all the while he jumped around the stagelike a madman.... clearly basking in the limelight of the stage.
