Product Description

Love, like everything in the universe, cannot be destroyed. But over time it can change.

The hot Texas nights were lonely for Ben before his heart began beating to the rhythm of two words; Tim Wyman. By all appearances, Tim had the perfect body and ideal life, but when a not-so-accidental collision brings them together, Ben discovers that the truth is rarely so simple. If winning Tim’s heart was an impossible quest, keeping it would prove even harder as family, society, and emotion threaten to tear them apart.

Something Like Summer is a love story spanning a decade and beyond as two boys discover what it means to be friends, lovers, and sometimes even enemies.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story of two halves 2 Jun 2011
By Acala
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This story is entertaining, very well-written and, ultimately, moving. The characters are (generally) funny and complex and it is the desire to find out what happens to them that keeps the reader engaged in the story.

However, there is one huge flaw in the work, namely that a lot of the snappy dialogue is lost in the second half of the book in favour of a more narrative style. This makes the second half of the book far less compelling and also means that the reader never really gets a real emotional sense of Jace, the third main character. The result, for me, was that I didn't really care what happened to him, leaving most of the latter part of the book feeling flat. Also, the major events at the end of the book, which redeem the story somewhat, are outlined in a few paragraphs, but should really have been dealt with in a less rushed way.

Overall, although it is a very enjoyable read, it falls short of being great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Positive and moving 20 Feb 2011
By Benjamin TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Benjamin Bentley is sixteen years old when we first meet him, he has been out since he was fourteen, coming out was his own decision, how else was he going to find a partner? When a new boy moves into the neighourhood he is infatuated, but how will he get to know this handsome well built guy, and anyway he is probably a straight jock, he won't have any time for skinny Ben who prefers singing to sports.

Against all the odds Ben manages to engineer an introduction, even if a somewhat disastrous one, but at least it gives him the chance to get to know Tim. A friendship develops, and despite Tim's protestations that he straight, he eventually beds Ben. But Tim'e refusal to come out seems to spell doom to their relationship.

In time Ben meets Jace, an air steward a few years his senior, and love looms again, all goes well until some three or four years since they parted Tim reenters Ben's life. Ben is torn between the two loves of his life, and the loyalties of all three are tested to the limits. It will take tragedy before matters are finally resolved.

Covering twelve years, this delightful love story follows Ben and his loves. Ben is a most likable, confident boy with a sense of humour, and while everyone else thinks Tim is the spoilt brat born of wealthy parents, Ben sees something much deeper. Jace too is a caring and loving man; both are deeply in love with Ben. It seems there can be no winners, yet this is a positive and moving well above average tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Being young and gay is still tough 10 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Perhaps 'Something like Summer' IS a little fanciful and not every young gay lad is able to creep into his boyfriend's home undetected by the sleeping parents but it makes a good read and could encourage others to value themselves as gay and o.k.Jay Bell tells the story of the developing relationship with gritty realism laced with self doubt and teenage pain. 'Something like Summer isn't just another tale of teenage angst and sex behind the bike sheds. The characters really do develop into young adults, with successes and failures in their lives as well as in their hearts. Worth reading? For teenagers certainly, for older readers - the story makes one realise how many kids struggle to find themselves in a world which even now can be cruel and vindictive to anyone a bit 'different'. Happy ending? SURE!

2.0 out of 5 stars Promising but plot bit disappointing
Promising character development with all but Jace. The plotlot was often frustrating and too slushy. Fun read all the same.
