While it will not change any minds who are already against a genre of apparent copycats of old styles, Fuel provide something still at least a little bit exciting for those who already love modern day hard rock, with a grunge and heavy metal vibe, and there's nothing wrong with an album of good music.
The key point that I spotted throughout "Something Like Human" was mouthpiece. Vocalist Brett Scallions has a terrific voice, that although at times, falls down the Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) path of trying a little too hard, makes each song worthwhile. Take opener, 'Last Time', a pure slab of catchy hard rock, that, without Scallions fine vocals, the chorus would be nowhere near as effective and in the end, it is what makes the song. The same goes for one of the other album highlights, 'Hemorrage (In My Hands)', which builds up and has an atmosphere that you could only cut with a rather sharp knife. It also shows that that Fuel use their influences well; Alice In Chains are often heard in a more toned down form, and nowhere near as turgid, Metallica can sometimes be heard among those style of acts that would have raised Fuel on a healthy musical diet.
A complete contrast to those previously mentioned slabs of atmosphere filled metal, 'Bad Day' is one of those ballads for...well a bad day. Surprisingly fine and understandable lyrics are a hard thing to come across these days, and this song is a good example. 'Innocent' is a similar style of track, with a fine slower guitar line, and angst filled lyrics, showing that Fuel can rock and roll over on their backs and plead too.
Other fine tracks such as 'Empty Spaces', 'Easy' and 'Slow', don't quite have the desired effect of the album highlights but do add up to make an at least above average hard rock album, in a time when good hard rock is hard to come by.
While it is not a classic of modern day rock, it is still a good way to spend some time and well worth at least a few plays and will hopefully fill a few holes. Whether it's hard riffs, sensitive, powerful vocals, or both, then Fuel's, "Something Like Human" should suit you down to the ground.
It's a human album by good human musicians.
4 stars.
The next song "Hemorrage", an incredibly emotional hard rock ballad but yet again, a unique sound that does not sound over-the-top emotional.
Other songs worth mentioning: "Bad day", "Empty Spaces", "Solace", "Innocent". There are no fillers on this album. Each track has its own melody, its own unique sound and EVERY TRACK is good.
Fuel, one of the most promising band. If you like Nickelback, you will like Fuel, but trust me, they are better. If you like Creed, you have never listened to good rock until you listen to Fuel. If you like Puddle of Mudd, you will never want to put "Something like human" down after you purchase it.
Buy this one and let it change your music taste!!!!!!!!!
Highly recommended!!!!!
