Product Description

Review

A novel of great humanity and compassion. --The Guardian

A moving, beautifully written novel that captures Africa in all its humanity and heartbreak...A book of meat and emotion, blood and fire, it is a story of our time. And a masterpiece. --Tony Parsons

An authentic, wellwritten and deeply-felt portrait of the tragedy that is South Sudan. --John Le Carré

Product Description

In Adek, a tiny village in the sprawling desert of Southern Sudan, a community lives on a knife-edge of starvation and war, at the mercy of the bombs that fall from the sky like rain. When three western aidworkers are stranded here - a place where poets carry Kalashnikovs and rebel commanders wear pink dressing gowns - their presence brings hope and danger in equal measure. An ominous ode to Africa's violent beauty, Something is Going to Fall Like Rain is also a life-affirming reminder that love and happiness can co-exist with famine and conflict.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something is Going to Fall Like Rain, 20 July 2009
We've become so used to ghastly but alienating news coverage Africa, and especially Sudan, that it's hard to imagine a fictional account that could augment our understanding. But this novel does just that. The characters are flawed yet compelling, and it works as much as a page-turning mystery as an examination of the conflict. This book leaves you better informed on a human as well as a political level. And the writing is exceptional, especially the descriptions of landscape, which you can smell and taste. Read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning first novel, 12 Aug 2009

Ros Wynne-Jones has written a stunning first novel, drawing on her own experiences as journalist amidst the chaos and suffering of Sudan. She conveys brilliantly the atmosphere of a beleagured people , victims of both a cynical government and its inertnational backers, and of aid workers, fallible but committed to helping them. This novel is comparable in its impact to the brilliant Half of a Yellow Sun, dealing with a different civil war in a different time, beautifully written and compelling throughout

I read this book in one day, not because it was easy reading but because it was so engrossing. An extraordinary, evocative and moving story, beautifully written and engaging. One of the best books I have read and a brilliant first novel.
