Product Description

Product Description

Few people know the trails, by-ways and footpaths of Britain's diverse landscape as well as Christopher Somerville. With regular features in leading national newspapers and programmes appearing on TV and radio, he has vast experience of walking throughout Britain, specialising in off-the-beaten-track travel on foot. In this exciting new title from the AA, he invites you to join him on a tour of discovery along twenty of his favourite routes. From the Cairngorms in Scotland to Penwith on the Cornish coast, Christopher tells the story of each region with his uniquely engaging prose. Each journey is a blend of landscape, geology, wildlife, music, literature, history and social history. Personal observations, anecdotes and stories capture the unique atmosphere of each region, and you can follow each of Christopher's routes with the aid of stunning photographs and specially drawn full-colour maps.

The photography (his own?)in Somerville's Travels is good - perhaps not quite as good as his wonderful "Welsh Borders" but in all respects an excellent complement to Christopher Somerville's poetic descriptions. His prose style should be studied by every scholar of the English language from O level to varsity and beyond.

The author gives details of 20 of his journeys thru the UK (14 in England,2 in Wales,3 in Scotland and 1 in Northern Ireland)ranging from 20 plus miles to over 100 miles- the latter by train.
For each trip the author gives an excellent text that descfibes landscape, geology, history, wildlife, music, literature and social history plus a very good map and details of distance, O.S.maps and websites.
The pictures are in the main excellent but a few are spread over 2 pages destroying thier integrity.
An excellent and humerous bookand very useful if you want to go on one of these journeys.
