Book Description
The Somersham Spa documents the rise and fall of one of the first spa towns in England. Today there is little evidence of the spa, no pump rooms or white washed Georgian houses. Yet for the whole of the 18th century Somersham was a spa town of note attracting the nobility and scientists from the Royal Academy. The Somersham Spa documents the rise and fall of a forgotten corner of English history whilst also giving an unusual insight into the world of Georgian science.
From the Publisher
The Somersham Spa is the second local history title in our series The English Village. The series accompanies the local history website somersham.info and is designed to paint a picture of the history of England through the eyes of the local community. Many of the original documents that tell the history of the village can be found on the website. The book series is designed to give some depth and colour to the events that relate to the historical documents. A further four titles are planned for publication over the next 18 months.
