Product Description

Jonathan Meades, The Observer, 25th November 2001.

"The greatest endeavour of popular architectural scholarship in the world."

Product Description

"Somerset is a serene county, varied in mood more than most, yet always mild", wrote Pevsner, drawing attention to its freedom from the extremes of its neighbouring counties. Highlights of this volume are a full account of the Georgian marvels of Bath, and a separate section on the port of Bristol, whose sumptuous Victorian commercial buildings are among the best of their date in England. The fourteenth-century Nunney Castle and John Nash's picturesque Blaise Hamlet are perfect examples of their type, while the cathedrals of Wells and Bristol and the Decorated Gothic of St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, inspired some of Pevsner's most eloquent writing on the character of English Gothic architecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic region, 27 Sep 2005
Chances are, if you're thinking of buying this book, you already know everything you need to know. It is the best architectural handbook available for the area, which contains some of the best of British buildings. Bath, Bristol, Wells, some of the all-time classics. It was the most useful thing I took on holiday with me, apart from a tripod. As always, what makes a Pevsner a good Pevsner is the buildings in the particular county, because the same incredibly high standard of textual accuracy and precision is maintained through just about every one. He gets a bit pithy about some sacred cows though, so beware all ye of delicate sensibilities and sentimentalism....

2.0 out of 5 stars You can't judge a book by its cover!, 17 Mar 2009
By Mrs. Pauline Bartlett "Bartlingham" (Channel Islands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The content of the book is excellent as with all the other books from the same series. Unfortunately our purchase of this item was ruined by the refusal of the seller to reveal his address so that we could send the book back to him and reclaim our money. The seller did not reveal that there was no dust jacket and whilst this would not normally bother me, the book was marked all the way down the front of the hard cover and had a stain inside the book also. I had wanted the book as a gift for my husband as we are visiting the area this Summer and wanted it close at hand. I have purchased, in the past, others from this series and all are in excellent condition. As this was intended as a gift, I shall in future contact the seller to obtain a photo of the book before purchasing as his refusal to reveal his address left me embarrased at its condition.
