Product Description

In this genre-defying grind-house throwback, a group of drug-fueled, sexually deviant medical students are systematically terrorized by Wilma and John Hopper. The Hoppers, serial murderers and rapists, mysteriously return from the 1970s and bring horrifying psychedelia with them. With comedy, subversion, satire and true gore, the students must face escalating attacks, shocking circumstances and visceral disgust.

Inspiration for the film include counter-culture American icons such as Roger Corman, Russ Meyer and Dennis Hopper. Shock cinema, with a tongue-in-cheek, humorous attitude is a hallmark of independent cinema in the USA and SOMEONE'S KNOCKING AT THE DOOR brings that philosophy to a new generation of socially conscious and intellectual viewers. Satire of sex, drugs and rock n roll abounds, with a particular look at the US culture of consumption, the medical community and follies of youth. With a hip, youthful score and fringe dynamics, the film brings an avant-garde, contemporary spin to a classic genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hallucinogenic Gore Fest With A Clever Twist 8 July 2010
Format:DVD
This flick starts with a '70's grindhouse look similar to the one Tarantino used for Deathproof. This is mainly to provide the backstory about the notorious serial rapists/killers John and Wilma Hooper, who have somehow managed to return to the present and reignite their gruesome acts of depravity. The director, Chad Ferrin, employes this exact same method whenever delving deeper into the history of these two vile individuals but the rest of the story, involving a group of medical students liberally experimenting in a new psychotropic drug, has been superbly shot for a low budget flick.

What seperates this B-movie from the rest of the pack is the clever and original techniques used to deliver a whole new meaning to the word surreal; the countless dream sequences are genuinely creepy and provide some authentic chills; the hallucinations are wild and vivid; the bizarre murders are full of gore, outrageous violence and extremely graphic as the victims are quite literally raped to death - the signature traits of John and Wilma Hooper.

After one of the students has been slain, his friends and family attend the funeral and hostility from the deceased's mother towards her son's college buddies is so strange; the whole scene plays out in a similar fashion to Sergio Leone's western showdown; the only thing missing was the hypnotic chimes from the gold watch; but, when the film has concluded and you've had time to reflect upon it, you'll be applauding the pure genius of it all.

The magnificent ending makes the whole film that little extra special; everything you've been lead to believe is totally and utterly wiped out and replaced with something so unexpected, yet so simple, you will want to watch it again straight after it's concluded.

2.0 out of 5 stars Migraine inducing 15 Jun 2012
By Mark G.
Format:DVD
A film that at first glance is about the ghosts of a pair of serial rapists that rape their victims to death is certainly only going to appeal to a niche audience. Luckily I am a sucker for anything over-the-top, low budget and twisted.

Unfortunately, the film wasn't quite all it could've been.
It has some good ideas going on but suffers from scenes being padded out too much in what appears to be an attempt to prolong the running time with some scenes dragging on and slowing the pace of the movie.
Other problems are when it cuts from one scene to another it just doesn't feel cohesive and felt like there were scenes missing.

If the writing and/or editing had just been tightened up it might have flowed a lot better and been a more enjoyable experience. Still that's not enough of a reason for giving it 2 stars; it is a low budget flick after all.
In fact, this would have been a 3 star review if not for one really annoying factor and that was the awful SFX during the dream/hallucination scenes. There was either a loud distortion or a high pitched whine and the problem was that they were so loud and intrusive, not to mention prolonged that I had to reach for the volume controls on more than a few occasions. In fact, by the time the film had finished, I had a splitting headache.

There were some good moments and overall it was a fairly good attempt, but it lacked in too many areas to make it an essential purchase which is a real shame.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor effort 10 Mar 2011
Format:DVD
Sometimes, you get to see a film that you want to shout about from the rooftops, especially if it's a low-budget gem, to make sure that as many people as possible are aware of it. Sometimes, unfortunately, you endure a film that's so terrible, you feel it's your duty - both as a reviewer and as a human being - to get people to avoid it. In fact (and I sat through "Seed"), I'd suggest a Uwe Boll film over this steaming pile of junk any day of the week.

Various write-ups online refer to this as a `genre-defying grind-house throwback', with `comedy, subversion, satire and true gore'. Is it genre-defying? Absolutely not. Is it a grind-house throwback? Yes, in that it's cheaply made and has plenty of nudity. Does it have `comedy, subversion and satire'? Not the film I watched. Does it have `true gore', whatever that might be? No, but it does have poorly put together make-up effects (though, to be fair - and this is the only time I will be on the film-makers side - they don't use any CGI and that's a blessing).

It's difficult to tell what's the worst thing about this. The direction is flat and uninspired, the acting is poor across the board, the dialogue is wooden and fussy (and lacking any kind of rhythm so it ends up sounding like it's been translated poorly into English) and the sound just disappears at times. The image (shot on a RED camera) is dreary and washed out and the make-up ("this true gore") is bland and poorly photographed, with the lack of any good or complicated work covered by lashing blood onto people.

Perhaps the worst sin is the pacing. For an 80 minute film (of which 8 minutes is taken up with credits - they run twice at the end), this has large sections where things slow down to such an extent you wonder if the DVD is working properly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected. Crazy. Fun. 1 Jan 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is so insane that it's funny! My guess is that this movie was intended to be a little… over the top? I don't know. Right in the beginning, I thought the actors weren't that great, but then I thought it was intentional maybe. But for most of the time, I was thinking, WTH am I watching here? But in the end, it did make sense, actually. Who would've thought?
