Book Description

14 May 2007

'It is my dearest hope that this book will allow me to reach out to others in pain and give them hope, for they too can choose to be a survivor.'

Izzy Hammond's deaf and partially blind parents attracted sympathy from the outside world, but no one knew of the horrific abuse their daughter was subjected to inside the family home.

In Someone To Watch Over Me, Izzy is now able to reveal how the vicious childhood abuse she suffered, first at the hands of her father and then by subsequent predators, cast a shadow over three generations of her family and led to a violent assault upon Izzy by her eldest daughter. Finally able to break the cycle, she has at last reclaimed a life free from the demons that have haunted her for so long.

5.0 out of 5 stars disturbing read 5 Jun 2007
Beautifully written biography. Recommended but a warning that the content of this book is very disturbing. Izzy suffered horrific abuse throughout the years including a gang rape.

Izzy's abuse began with her father in a household where her parents were disabled and she had no one to turn to. As a result of being abused Izzy went onto a life of misery involving drugs, crime and further abuse. Suffering from low self esteem Izzy plunders from one disastrous relationship to another.

This is at times a very hard read and moved me to tears in the chapter dealing with the gang rape. How the writer has survived such a horrific attack and managed to write about it is truly heartwrenching

The happy ending that the reader will wish for Izzy has yet to materialise as it is an ongoing struggle for her to come to terms with the tragic events that have passed.

I wish the writer well and feel her book would be an inspiration to any person who finds themselves in similar situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars IZZY,AN INSPIRATION 24 Sep 2012

Another incredible true story on child abuse, plus more to the point surviving it,all be it scarred for life.
It's certainly an interesting read and doesn't take long to do so,partly because it's so gripping.
Izzy is raised by partially blind and deaf parents, the male of which is a sick pervert. The mother does her best to her love and support but unfortunately isn't strong enough to fight the bully that is her husband.
Izzy has some good moments with her uncle and aunty, but too many times ends up back in hell, where vile sexual and serious pysical abuse takes place on a daily or nightly basis.
When taken to other places that should be looking after her, things aren't any better, abuse of various sorts, just by other freaks.
She runs away, runs into other abusive situations and grows up trying to deal with this, unfortunately by running into what turns out to be the wrong hands.
We follow Izzy as an adult,a mother, her troubles with her own kids and more, such as depression.
Is it any wonder she tried to commit suicide at 11?
This is a recommended read for anyone into these kind of books.
Hats off to you Izzy, you're remarkable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Gripping Tragic Life Story 9 Sep 2010
This is only the second book in the "Tragic Life Stories" genre that I've read, the other book being A Child Called It. Even though the latter is supposed to be one of the best / original in its genre, I much preferred Someone To Watch Over Me. The writing was much better and it read like a story, where the end of each chapter left you bursting to start the next. Because of this I just couldn't put this book down! The only downside I thought was the title of the book - it's pointless. I couldn't see why it came to be called that?

This poor girl had an awful childhood. It was so full of unexpected turns - I kept on hoping the next corner would hold something better but she seems to have be thrown from one bad situation straight into another bad situation over and over again. Her story, although tragic, is extremely gripping and I couldn't wait to pick it up again to find out what happened next.

I'm not sure if I'll be reading any further tragic life stories since I guess they all tend to merge into one another after a while in terms of the horror and abuse, but I'm really glad I read this particular book above all the many others available in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... 29 Aug 2008
Izzy Hamond's story is incredibly sad and at times extremely frustrating. The abuse she suffered at the hands of her birth father was atrocious and why Social Services never picked up on this and investigated into why Izzy was acting out is beyond me. I feel incredibly sorry that she never got to meet her birth mother again in person.
I only hope everything works out well for Izzy and all her family.

It is a heartbreaking read, I read it in 4 hours. I just could not put it down.

Another good read about true accounts of child and domestic abuse. I was astonished at how much pain and suffering one human can go through in a lifetime. it really made me feel fortunate. I applaud this woman for her incredible strength and determination. You definitely should give this a read.
