Amazon.co.uk Review

Someone to Watch Over Me is a stylish, smart film noir directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner). The movie stars Tom Berenger as a New York cop and family man who falls for the rich and beautiful witness (Mimi Rogers) he's assigned to protect. Scott, who always displays a distinctive eye for extraordinary art direction, does something here he should be doing a lot more often: directing contemporary noir. Berenger and Rogers rise to the occasion, seemingly aware that they're making something special. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Someone To Watch Over Me is a rare film. Noir is a genre seldom visited by filmmakers in modern movies, but the director Ridley Scott makes a convincing case for a wider contemporary airing.

Tom Berenger plays a street-wise but flawed detective assigned to protect a witness - a wealthy and beautiful socialite, played by Mimi Rogers. As the plot develops the pair are drawn deeper into danger and intrigue within a strata of society alien to Berengers' character. The plot is complicated by the danger created through their strong attraction despite the detective being married.

Better known perhaps for seminal films such as Alien and Blade Runner, Scott directed this movie with just as much panache and sophistication. The film announces itself as a visually stunning, atmospheric and stylish thriller right from the first shot - a classic and often copied (but never equalled) swooping helicopter pan over a night-time New York. Performances are assured and convincing with Mimi Rogers providing ample quantities of the female glamour required in any film noir. The clever occasional use of period locations not only adds atmosphere but gives a nod to the era in which this genre evolved.

Overall this is a very satisfying, and taut thriller from one of the truly great directors. If you appreciate quality filmmaking this will certainly not disappoint. Recommended.

Well worth watching 6 Mar 2009
Format:DVD
A very intriguing film noir which starts out laced with occasional humour which later turns into gritty, hard-nosed drama as the plot develops. Berenger's cop is believable and Rogers' rich socialite is beautiful (although the producers could have made more of Mimi Rogers' beauty at times) and the underlying plot of the two becoming attracted (and we assume sleeping together) whilst he is assigned to witness protection after she sees a socialite pal murdered is played out well. As an example of the 80's it favours well the hair and the social glitz and glamour whilst paying good homage to the poorer part of New York. The contrast between Manhatten and Queens and yet their closeness is very evident.

Enjoyable might not be the right word to describe a film in which the basic plot is one of a murderer attacking those who might bring him to justice but I did enjoy the hour and forty minutes or so relaxing to watch this film and would recommend it if you fancy a trip back to the 80's and a good thriller to boot.

(THE FILM)A stunning New York socialite and a down-to-earth city cop are caught in a deadly web of illicit passion
and heart-stopping suspense in this taut, stylish thriller.

Newly-appointed detective Mike Keegan (Tom Berenger) finds his life turned upside-down when he's assigned to protect Claire Gregory (Mimi Rogers),
the beautiful eyewitness to a brutal murder.

Lured into danger and the dizzying heights of Gregory's glamorous lifestyle, Keegan struggles to walk the line between protection and obsession -
while trying to stay one step ahead of the psychotic killer.

Acclaimed director Ridley Scott paints an erotically seductive portrait of high-stakes suspense in America's power playground in 'Someone To Watch Over Me'.
WHAT CAN I SAY?
Ridley Scott keep this film very compelling thanks to some great and perfect tight direction using different angles camera and magnificent photography and shadows in the night, to express the differences between the two worlds.
plus a wonderful performances from the cast.
this is the best role of Mimi Rogers, amazingly perfect as an elegant, wealthy and needy of love woman and wearing a beautiful hair style.
Tom Berenger is outstanding as Mike, as a streetwise cop who just made detective he this time do not know Where protection ends, and his obsession begins...
and Lorraine Bracco is also fantastic in the role of a simple woman and wounded wife
plus the late Andreas Katsulas' sadly Died in 2006 age 59 whose physiognomy and bearing make him the perfect choice for the story's villain.as he was 6 years later in a similar or you cold say the same roll in(( the Fugitive ))
Scott keeps everything here extremely classy.
It's a romantic thriller and throwback to the Noir films of the 1940's.
The classical music scores add a perfect touch highlighting the three versions of the song of George and Ira Gershwin, which gives the title of the film
((Someone To Watch Over Me))
is also one of the better thrillers of the 1980's,
it is Underrated Masterpiece,
and a worthy testament to Ridley Scott's versatility as a director.
