Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Cathy Kelly's Someone Like You is the uplifting tale of three thirtysomething women who meet on holiday in Egypt and become close friends. Emma, Leonie and Hannah are all at different stages in their lives but have one thing in common--each one is waiting for that final jigsaw piece to slot into place, the elusive thing that will make them truly happy. Newly married Emma yearns for a baby. Feeling "infertile, barren, hopeless and useless as a woman", she also has to deal with a domineering father who still treats her like a child. Veterinary nurse Leonie is on the hunt for a man "who lives life with passion and vigour", and will give her all the things that were missing from her 10-year marriage. Hannah has been on a mission to become an independent woman ever since Harry walked out and decided that a "year-long trek around South America" was more important than their relationship.

As their stories develop, we witness the three women growing to lean on each other as they strive to fulfil their dreams. Friendship is a pivotal theme and Kelly, author of She's the One and Never Too Late, uses the growing bond between these women to reveal their innermost thoughts and secrets, creating fully realised, three-dimensional characters. This is evident as Emma plunges deeper into depression, realising that she may not be able to conceive: "... the pain hit her again. The pain of knowing that there had been no baby growing safely inside her, wrapped in fierce love and protected from the world by Emma's body ... She heard a noise and realised that it was herself, crying, keening like a woman at a funeral". Fans of Cathy Kelly will undoubtedly relish this modern tale of love and friendship. --Amy Gallagher --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - you won't want to put it down, 10 May 2001
By A Customer
The book, at first, appeared daunting by its thickness. An inevitably large tome!!

Upon reading the first page however I knew I would be hooked. The book is a delightful insight into the lives of three very different women, of which the reader can see aspects of herself in them all. They initially meet on holiday in Egypt and become firm friends, despite their differences (or because of!).

Emma with the difficult and unenviable situation with her mother and her desperate longing for a baby.

Leonie bravely ended her 10-year marriage and is now searching for her one true love.

Hannah, hurt by men and claiming her independence.

Cathy Kelly has an inane knack of bringing the characters so true to life you really begin to understand and share the pain that these women go through and feel as though you are there with them. Having experienced similar, Emma's situation with her mother was portrayed so accurately and with such compassion that I actually cried.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this to all you holiday makers as the "Beach Book of the Year". I actually took time out of my socialising to stop in and read this book, it was that good!! It was just a pity that the book had to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 19 Jun 2003
By A Customer
This was the first book I have read by Cathy Kelly and I loved it. Although the book is quite large and you wonder how you will get through it all, I throughly enjoyed this book. I fell in love with all of the charcters and felt very very sad when I finished it. I particularly liked Hannah and felt incredibly sorry for her, when she meets the delectable Felix. I also felt sorry for Emma and her situation, it was so delicately told that it stirred many emotions. A real chick-lit book, read this book because it is fanatstic, if anyone is wanting a new Chick Lit author to try, try this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars You can delve into the book and forget everything around you, 11 Nov 2001
This book is fantastic! If you like a romantic and realistic storyline this is the book for you. You can picture the characters in the finest detail and relate to so many of the topics Cathy Kelly approaches. The story follows the lives of three women who meet on a cruise to Eygpt. After the holiday ends they decide to stay in touch. From falling in love with irresistable actors to caring for your mother who is suffering from Alzeimers. There is nothing these women cannot do. You'll desperately want to see this trio achieve their dreams!
