Product Description

As the search for peace in Ireland gathers momentum, British counter-terrorism agent, Mike Devon, is handed a chilling mission – put the IRA out of business at any cost.

He assembles an elite undercover squad determined to neutralise the entire IRA leadership. Kidnap, torture and shoot-to-kill tactics are all on Devon’s agenda as he sets about the task with a ruthlessness the IRA has never before had to face.

But the IRA has its own specialist operative. Cold-hearted assassin Fergal McSweeney is brought out of semi-retirement to launch one final murderous campaign against the British establishment.

Before settling for peace both sides are determined to first win the ultimate victory.

Devon and McSweeney had clashed years before in Chicago in an operation that ended the life of the British agent’s girlfriend. Now it has become personal.
The action races from Chicago to London, and from Belfast to Glasgow, before climaxing in a final bloody showdown in the suburbs of Dublin.

When the dust settles who will walk away?

Someone Has To Pay is the debut thriller of Irish writer Joe McCoubrey, a former journalist who worked through the worst of the Irish troubles. His insight and knowledge of the period provides an authentic backdrop for a story as uncompromising as the people and events that shaped the history of a troubled land.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Barnstorming Read 10 Oct 2012

This is one of the best action thrillers I have read for some time. The pace is hectic but allows readers time to get to know the characters in a story that provides a fascinating insight to the troubles that afflicted Ireland. There's a finely woven plot that keeps you avidly following events as they unfold and ultimately makes you sad when you reach the end of the journey. I will be looking out for more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced not stop action delivered 28 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the first book I have read by this author and I wasn't disappointed. There were many characters to keep up with but thankfully the author kept the protagonist and antagonist consistent and the supporting characters were easy to follow.

The pace is fast and as stated in the title of this review, was non stop. The dialogue was good and easy to understand. I like the fact that this is a British book as I am American and have never visited the area; the setting opened my imagination up to the settings the author created.

There were some instances I had to stretch my imagination to think if a certain situation was believable or not and that is why I rated it a four star instead of a five star. Yes, I know this is a work of fiction but I still like for scenes to be conceivable - this was in relation to the interrogation of the prisoners.

HOWEVER, this is just the personal perspective of the reader and this book is well worth your time in reading and at the low price it is advertised, purchasing it is clearly worth it! I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Thriller 15 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
From the very first page you know the author has done his research, fast paced and well written. Set amongst the troubles and complicated political situation that was Northern Ireland in the 80s and 90s, this could only have been written by someone who had been there and experienced it first hand which indeed Joe has, this gives authenticity and atmosphere to every word and sentence within. This is a must have for every reader who likes a good thriller, and I for one can not wait for the next offering from Joe McCoubrey.

Good story but where did the Americans find the word 'gotten'? Sorry but the word gets under my skin and eliminates the fifth star.
