Book Description

2 Oct 2003
Sam and Dad have made a kite. They have made it large. They have made it light. They go out on a windy day to see if they can fly it but the wind blows hard and Dad thinks Sam's too small to fly the kite. It needs someone bigger - or does it? A witty and rollicking story, which serves as a cautionary tale to bossy adults everywhere.

Adrian Reynolds became a household name with Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs, sales of which exceed 90,000 copies in the UK, and has been shortlisted for the Children's Book Award.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun rhyming story with lovely pictures 11 April 2005
By ELH Browning VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a lovely story, with clean and appealing illustrations, of a father flying a kite and his little boy begging for a turn. Dad thinks Sam is too little and everyone has a try at catching the runaway kite, e.g. the postman and his sack of mail, a bank robber escaped from jail... and animals at the zoo, all with great rhyming text and a good paced rhythm. My children love it that all the adults struggle and in the end it is actually the little boy who is just right. This book is so lovely to share our local 'author' chose to read it on his visit to the community preschool. Perfect from 2 through 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars A firm favourite 6 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I first stumbled across this book at the library and my 3yr old son loves it. The book is in rhyme with a nice rhythm to it. I finally broke down and bought him his own copy as it got so much use! The illustrations are clear and fairly simple but it is the words (and silliness!) that we've fallen for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bigger 20 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback
My 22 month old daughter's book of the moment. She loves to shout out "bigger" at the appropriate point (at the end of every rhyme). We've read it so many times I can recite it by heart... and I'm thankful it's NOT one of those annoying ones that gets on your nerves like some do. At the top of mine, as well as daughter's, current favourites!

This story is great for 2-5 year olds, as a previous reviewer has said. What we love about it, is the observation that children of this age clearly understand: Caring adults can be over protective towards their children while at the same time, they may be quite reckless themselves. At the end, Sam essentially says 'I told you I could do it' to his cautious Dad who had underestimated his boy's ability to keep a kite under control.

What more can I say? We found this book in the library (as it's illustrated by Adrian Reynolds who also did Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs)and had to buy it! The words are delightful and we love the build up as Sam picks up more and more characters with his kite.... Is Sam big enough to fly the kite on his own? It's a joy to read again and again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 26 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my son after he borrowed it from the library and loved it (I had to read it at bedtime every night for 3 weeks)!
I decided to buy him his own copy as he wanted to keep borrowing it from the library over and over again.
Although I no longer have to read it every night it's still one of the bedtime favourites. This is despite him knowing all the words by heart now.
At 3 years old the book is appropriate for his age, though I think it could also be suitable for a slightly older child too, perhaps a 5 or 6 year old.
