to cherish 4 Aug. 1999

This is a record that will never reach the stature of the greatest, but in a way it is a classic. And even if the amazement about it will be tempered, it's undeniable beauty wil keep you turning back to it. What with two of Coltrane's most enticing solo's included, where his experimentation is embedded in the high aesthetics of Miles. The understated swinging rhythm section simply sparks. Miles is in his strongest melancholy moods. While Mobley sounds like a swooning lover...but, the one he sings for is taken away by the 'trane'. And here lies the only little flaw. All the tracks without Coltrane are overshadowed by the two in which he throws such a compelling contrast with the other great horn players. You ache for him to start playing...
Superb Stylings from One of the Best 3 Aug. 2015

I was fortunate in being able to find this on CD on the Vee Jay label some time ago as opposed to being left with mp3 downloads. There is a Collectables CD available, but it does not appear, according to the Amazon track listing, to contain all of the 15 cuts that were released on the Vee Jay CD or in the mp3 format. If you are content with mp3, fine, as it contains all of the Vee Jay tracks.

The CD and mp3 contain the original 1961 LP cuts plus five bonus tracks from those sessions. Fortunately, the old tapes were well preserved and the sound is just fine on most of the tracks. On this release, Wynton Kelly is accompanied mostly by Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Paul Chambers and Philly Joe jones play on three tracks and Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter contribute on one track. So, the musicianship is outstanding.

Wynton Kelly was a very talented pianist, whether accompanying or soloing. He possessed impressive dexterity, as is evident in these recordings, which contain much melodic and fluid phrasing. This is very pleasant material. Like all first rate jazz, there are interesting improvisations throughout, but there is nothing too esoteric here and the cuts are not so lengthy as to become tedious. They really swing and work well in the trio setting. I recommend this release to anyone who enjoys jazz piano trio recordings. It's essential material, especially if you are a Wynton Kelly fan. Don't pass this one up.
I love the melodic playing of Wynton Kelly 28 May 2015

I'm prejudiced. I love the melodic playing of Wynton Kelly. This is much like his keyboard work on the early Miles Davis recordings on Prestige. it strikes of early bop.

"Some Day My Prince WIll Come" CD Review 26 Oct. 2013
By Random Buyer - Published on
Format: Audio CD
The picture of the product for purchase was an Original Master Recording of the "Some Day My Prince Will Come" CD.
What I received in the mail was a lower quality recording from Columbia of the exact same CD.
Showing one CD for sale and selling another one is a very deceptive way to do business.
