To my mind, this is one of Paul Newman's finest performances. In fact, being such a "pretty" boy has perhaps done him no favours in terms of being taken seriously because this (and the excellent portrayal of the eponimous "Cool Hand Luke") are right up there among the best screen performances I've seen. However that doesn't seem to be common knowledge amongst film buffs.

"Somebody..." is based on the autobiography of boxer Rocky Graziano and Newman brings immense power and vulnerability to a damaged man who is nonetheless blessed with immense strength and resilience, both physically & mentally. With a brilliant script, excellent direction and a strong support cast, this is a first rate movie that should appeal to all, whether you're a boxing fan or not. I would argue that it's better than "Raging Bull" although that's just a personal opinion. However, it's definitely far superior to the likes of all those Rocky films.

Not only is it a crime that this brilliant boxing movie only received one Academy Award (for cinematography) but it's also a crime that it's not available on PAL format video. If you have NTSC playback on your machine, do yourself a favour and get on to Amazon.com as it isn't out of print in the States. I promise you won't regret it.

One more of those fighters who have to fight to survive, or at times just to avoid dying by self negligence, at least. He had everything against him. A poor Italian in New York in the bad years of the post depression decade. His mother forced his father to stop fighting. He lived in gangs even before he could walk. He got in jail more than he should have. He was drafted into the army on the most voluntary obligation possible. He got discharged dishonorably and was sent to one more prison term and there he was noticed as a fighter and was trained into boxing by some military chap who was seeing millions behind him. He even fell in love when he shouldn't have and he missed a fight. In one word he was a loser. And yet he will manage to get to the top and the championship. In those 1950s they did not hesitate on the clichés and the simple scenarios and it worked. It is true they were launching a brand new young actor and that one knew how to make things worth seeing and watching. The film is quite good, in black and white, for his time and worth seeing still today though of course slightly too slow and sentimental, but well we cannot always have modern special effect saturated films all the time. So enjoy the showing.

This was one of my favourite films when I was a teenager long ago, and I was very keen to see it again. I wish I had not spoiled my distant memories. I found it unconvincing and overly sentimental, particularly in Rocky's relationships with his parents. The fights against Tony Zale were frankly ludicrous.
Newman's early 'Actors Studio' style has not stood the test of time well, the best performance coming from Sal Mineo.
