His earlier book - The Stolen Years - is one of my favourite books of all time though sadly no longer in print. I buy up copies whenever I come across them as gifts for close friends and family. In places Some Of It Was Fun has touches of the old genius - the final chapter is a real tear jerker capturing the magic of fishing with his dogs, comic moments teaching them to retrieve and the sadness of saying farewell.

Another beautifully written book.If anyone is thinking about visiting or has visited Eskdale and is going to visit or has visited the shrine that is "Cragg Cottage" then this book becomes vibrant and alive. You can even stop there. Its now a holiday cottage.Dont think it will have the same charm and atmosphere as it had,as its been totally re-modernised throughout.Hugh's study looks much the same as it was though.I had a nosey through the window!!(It should be a museum in Hugh & Kathleens memory in my opinion. They have one for everyone else in the Lake District). The port of Ravenglass,Hardnott Fort, the views down Eskdale,Raven Crag and the River Esk itself...Visit,then immerse yourself in this wonderful book. Its another one of those Hugh Falkus books like The Stolen Years and such that take you away to his unique world. And what a world it was..Once read, never ever forgotten!!
If you havn't read The Stolen Years then beg, steal, borrow or kill to get your mitts on a copy...£150 plus to get a copy these days but its worth the money. Its a beautiful, beautiful read. You might pay £150 for it but think of it as an investment. The only problem is,is that you might want to sell your wife to an egyptian slave trader rather than this book to get your money back!!!

Either read his own works or biographies of him but not both since never the twain shall meet. It doesn't need to be true to be believable but the views of others ruin it for you.

A great fishing man of whom I have read other works, an interesting inside to a man who lived to fish but loved to help others through his writings.
