Product Description

‘An exciting, action-packed book, which makes a very enjoyable, satisfying read as the women begin to find their own identities in a male-dominated world.’ Western Telegraph
Despite the privations and the danger, living and loving must go on. Some Sunny Day vividly depicts the courage, the grit, the emotion and the defiant laughter of war torn London when, as friends and neighbours, men and women, rich and poor, the inhabitants of Lavender Road face up the the trials and tribulations of the London Blitz.
Shy Katy Parsons from the pub finally summons the courage to enroll as a nurse, but finds the rigours of hospital life even more difficult to bear than her secret love for the enigmatic, unobtainable Canadian, Ward Frazer.
Away on an ENSA tour, Jen Carter finds herself unexpectedly homesick, while her mother, Joyce, prefers to face the terror of the burning streets on the WVS van than suffer her husband’s brutality at home.
Pam Nelson longs for a baby to breathe life into her flagging marriage. At the other end of the street, eighteen year old Louise, daughter of the strict, authoritarian brewer Greville Rutherford, faces the crisis of her life when she finds she is pregnant with an illegitimate child.
'Funny, poignant, emotional and unputdownable, Some Sunny Day rips along, taking you with it into wartime London and the lives of these engaging and incredibly varied characters.'

The residents of Lavender Road could be on your street or my street. They range from the gruff aristocrats to the rough working man and from the submissive wife to a young woman who is not afraid to take life by the horns and twist it her way.

Sometimes the weakest personalities rise to shine as the brightest star. Case in point is Katy Parsons. Shy, asthmatic and awkward with men, her life takes turns she could never have imagined. Likewise Joyce Carter finds herself staring down her low life husband to finally protect herself from his unbearable cruelty.

Everyone seems to grow in depth of character throughout the book. Women become bolder and stronger as they step into the workplace for the first time. Men who were never considered to have any athletic prowess of any kind, find themselves staring death in the face as they perform daring rescues.

Only two men don't change. Mr. Rutherford is harsh and thinks nothing of stepping on the lower classes and that does not change until he tries to bully Katy Parsons Frasers. He has met his match in her stubborness and thinks about backing down. And Stanley, the lowlife husband of Joyce, goes from bad to worse, his dishonest streak driven by his weakness for alcohol.

The two romantic heroes of the book are the strong and handsome Ward Fraser, a Canadian, risking his life for the Mother Country and shy, retiring Alan Nelson, who while not in wartime service strives and succeeds in making a huge contribution in saving people from the bombed ruins.

Each character brings some special quality to the story. Ms. Carey puts us on Lavender Road. We hear the sirens, smell the cordite, hear the crumps of the bombs and find peace in the countryside.

One of the best books that I have read in the category of WWII fiction.

A good read 5 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the second book, and is more action packed
than the first, this follows on directley from lavander road, the "phoney war" is now over and the residents now have to cope with the full horrors of the blitz, Jen is now away on tour with
E.N.S.A, Katy is training to be a nurse and Louise
is pregnant and un-married.
If you like lilian Harry, maureen Lee or Victor Pemberton you will love this, but you will have to buy all three books as the story continues through out them.
