Product Description

Forbidden love and family secrets In World War Two Liverpool in the heartrending new saga from the author of Goodnight Sweetheart.

Rosie has grown up in the heart of Liverpool's Italian community, treated as one of their own. With a father away at sea and a mother more interested in other men than her only daughter, the bighearted Grenellis are the closest thing Rosie has to a proper family.

But when war breaks out, and Italy becomes the Allies' adversary, everything changes. The community is torn in two: friends become enemies, neighbours become traitors and Rosie is left uncertain of just who she can trust.

As war intensifies, and Liverpool is subjected to relentless bombings, things become more perilous. When a devastating attack leaves her mother dead, Rosie is sent to live with her aunt in Edge Hill. Her father is feared missing at sea and her aunt lets slip a family secret which has unimaginable consequences…

Fleeing her cruel aunt, Rosie becomes a Land Girl and falls in love – with someone utterly forbidden. As bombs drop and families are ripped apart by conflict at home and abroad, can they find happiness or will war stand in their way?

Format:Paperback
Brilliant book. Excellent story and lots of history, which was easy to understand. When I started to read this book I could'nt put it down. Annie writes from the heart and I am sure all who read her books will agree they are well worth the money. Try it I dont think you will be sorry.

Slow... 22 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
I feel a bit bad writing this review when the one below is so glowing! I found this book so slow! I really like Liverpool books and was quite excited finding a new Liverpool author. I gave up after about 100 pages and they took me about 2 weeks to read. I just could not get into it and found the characters a bit fake. It could be that I was not in the mood for that kind of book at the time but when I have read a really good Maureen Lee it pales into significance.

I am a huge fan of Annie Groves books and have gotten through nearly all of her collection since I got my kindle.

Usually I am hooked after the first few pages of her books but this one took a little longer to get into as it went into the Italian community in quite a lot of detail which didn't seem all that relevant at first. Towards the end however it becomes clear why the detail was needed and I liked this book just as much as her others.
