5.0 out of 5 stars Andrews Sisters mid 1940s to 1961... 18 Nov 2012
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Just got hold of this comprehensive Jasmine box set of The famous Andrews Sisters and guests. There are 117 tracks from a very wide time span of the mid 1940s to 1961. There are 5 of the 78 album collections included Irving Berlin Songs; Go West Young Man featuring Bing Crosby; I Love to Tell the Story; My Isle of Golden Dreams & Sing Sing Sing. There is a liner by Patti Andrews and some information of the records included. sound quality transfers are excellent and the price most affordable for such a huge collection. I have played this set 6 times already and feel that the Andrews Sisters deserve much more airplay in the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ANDREWS SISTERS COLLECTION! 29 Oct 2012
By A. POLLOCK TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
There are many available collections by the Andrews Sisters who reigned supreme as iconic close-harmony Queens during the Forties and beyond with vocal style and swing and boogie-woogie hits continuing to influence such luminaries as Bette Midler and The Puppini Sisters. However, look elsewhere for those Forties hits as Jasmine Records have cornered the market for more esoteric material as far as releases of the trio's rarer output is concerned. Having previously released a four-disc box-set around ten years ago, this comprehensive follow-up contains no fewer than 117 songs with the welcome availability of many studio recordings that have not seen the light of day since their initial release on 78rpm discs. Anyone will be hard-pressed to find JOLLY FELLA TARENTELLA, THE TELEPHONE SONG, THAT EVER LOVIN' RAG, THAT'S MY HOME and THE WINDMILL'S TURNING elsewhere although I must admit my enjoyment of this set has deterred me from straying too far into investigating other collections. Successful collaborations with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (I USED TO LOVE YOU), Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians (STARS ARE THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN), Russ Morgan & his Orchestra (SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON) and Gordon Jenkins (THE WEDDING OF LILI MARLENE) are matched by notable duets with Al Jolson (THE OLD PIANO ROLL BLUES), Jimmy Durante (IT'S BIGGER THAN BOTH OF US), Dick Haymes (WUNDERBAR), Danny Kaye (ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO FRONT TEETH), Dan Dailey (TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME) and Desi Arnaz (OLD DON JUAN). 5.0 out of 5 stars The first girl group 9 Jan 2013
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
The Andrews Sisters lasted well into the 60s when they signed with Dot but here its the Decca recordings which purposely leave out the obvious hits to concentrate on the little known.
The only albums made by the group were all 10" ones and are all here-the 12" ones would appear on Dot like Hits of the Charleson Era.
Jasmine issued last year an album by Patti Andrews who looks like being the only survivor from the 40s and 50s girl years. My American penfriend has just told me that Patti Page has just departed for the next room

5.0 out of 5 stars A HUMDINGER OF A COMPILATION 29 Oct 2012
By Barry McCanna TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a humdinger of a compilation, with 117 tracks covering the latter part of the Andrews Sisters' career from the mid-forties until late 1953, plus reunions in 1959 and 1961. Thus it eschews many of the familiar hits, but what's here is no less satisfying. It includes the contents of five Decca LPs, detailed in Robert Nickora's liner note as "Irving Berlin Songs" (CD 1, tracks 1 to 8), "Go West Young Man" with Bing Crosby (CD 2, tracks 14 to 21), "I Love to Tell the Story" a collection of hymns with Victor Young (CD 2, tracks 1 to 8), "My Isle of Golden Dreams" a collection of Hawaiian songs with Alfred Alpaka (CD 3, track 21 to 28), and "Sing, Sing, Sing" (CD 4, tracks 1 to 8).

The sisters collaborated with other singers, and in addition to those already mentioned Al Jolson, Dick Haymes, Danny Kaye, and Jimmy Durante are included. There are a number of rarities here also, some of which were only issued variously in India, Argentina, and the UK. The accompaniments deserve mention also, including Vic Schoen, Guy Lombardo & his Royal Canadians, Gordon Jenkins, Russ Morgan, Skip Martin, Sy Oliver and Nelson Riddle. In short, this is a fantastic bargain, which should appeal to lovers of good music, and coincidentally show up the deficiencies of today's so-called girl bands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compillation 28 Oct 2012
By Ants - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Really good to have all these great songs together on one set, this is one of the most comprehensive collections of the Andrews Sisters recordings and coupled with the other Jasmine and Sepia Label collections available, is an excellent overview of the eclectic recordings the girls recorded during their 30 year career. These three real siblings had a massive impact on the entertainment history during the 1930s & 1940s recording everything from Hawaiian to Boogie, Religious to Country, Christmas to Pop. These girls could sing anything and with their on the spot harmonies, they did it, and did it really well.

The recordings in this collection show the Andrews Sisters versatility, many of the recordings are laden with Andrews Sisters fun and entertainment. I must say however the reason that I have not given this collection 5 stars is that many of the individual songs are not new to cd. This is disappointing in that there are still many really good recordings from The Andrews Sisters still only available in their original format of 78rpm.

Jasmine researchers should look at any future compilation and select from the list below to put together a set of recordings by these girls that are either not yet on cd or appear on other cds available with very poor transfer quality.

I Married An Angel, Oh He Loves Me, Lets Pack Our Things And Trek, Music Makers, Oh Faithless Maid, My Love Went Without Water (South Africa Release), Mean To Me, Molly Malone, Helena, Honey, The Nickel Serenade, I Wish I Had A Dime, Why Don't We Do This More Often, At Sonyas Café, He Said She Said, Boolee Boolee Boon, What To Do, The Hummingbird, East Of The Rockies, Bei Mir Bist Du Schon(1944 Version), Rhumboogie(1944 Version), Idle Chatter

Not wishing to sound too ungrateful to Jasmine Records This compilation is still worth every penny and the quality of the transfers from the original recordings is of a really good standard. So on a positive note if you like The Andrews Sisters or music from this era then its well worth purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection - But...... 21 Sep 2013

Very Happy with this collection. I purchased the MP3 version. Lots of rare tracks that I've been searching for and sound quality was great. Biggest downside to MP3 product is liner notes are not included which is very disappointing. If anyone knows where I can obtain or purchase a copy of the liner notes, please let me know.....this was only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars. Otherwise, I highly recommend adding this to your collection.

I DO like their charming sound, nostalgic but classical evergreen-like, to me. They do also play wonderfully with the rythm at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Sunny Day Indeed !!! 6 April 2013
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Andrews Sisters (LaVerne Sophia, July 6, 1911 - May 8, 1967), Maxine Angelyn "Maxene" (January 3, 1916 - October 21, 1995) and Patricia Marie "Patty" (February 16, 1918 - January 30, 2013) sold millions and millions of records over decades--and no wonder, these ladies had incredible talent!

This is an excellent four CD set of wonderful music from The Andrews Sisters. They sang and harmonized far better than most of the other sister acts, although oddly enough they are not truly remembered as much as they really should be. Hopefully that will change with continued sales of CDs and box sets like this one. The tracks on these four CDs prove just versatile The Andrews Sisters were and how they worked with the best of the best: Al Jolson; Bing Crosby; Victor Young; Danny Kaye; Jimmy Durante--and more! Kudos to the reviewer who notes that this box set has music from five Decca LPs. In addition, the sound quality overall is very good.

When The Andrews Sisters sang, people listened. They made millions of people happy with their remarkable, appealing sound and there was true sincerity, honesty and passion in their hearts when they sang. Their songs could make the airwaves sizzle, too! Their mesmerizing style is obvious when you listen to the tracks here; and their duets on these CDs are delightful to listen to over and over again. I especially like the duets with Bing Crosby and Al Jolson but the others are very, very good as well!

While the musical accompaniments always fit in well with their vocals, Patty, Maxine and LaVerne remain squarely front and center, only sharing the spotlight when they performed with other artists.

I highly recommend this CD set for any fan of The Andrews Sisters. It remains an essential addition to any collection someone would want of their genius. True, the more casual fan or newcomer may want to start with a single CD rather than this four disc set. On the other hand, their artistry is so distinct and superior that this could also make a fine place to start! The Andrews Sisters were a wonderful team.
