Rotten in a good way! 30 Mar 2003
By Guy
Format:Audio CD
Rather under-rated album of interviews etc. Often seen as a cheapo-rip-off album - a bit unfair really. Some interesting, and, at times, highly amusing words from the lads, regarding fame, record company politics, the Queen and large breasted ladies. This album has a great sleeve also, so order now!

I remember when I first heard about this album as a teenager in 1981. I asked the main punk in our street what it was like and he just said "Yeah, it's a laugh!" and wouldn't elaborate. So I went and bought it, assuming it was an album of songs. This album contains NO songs, apart from small snippets from ads, and is, for the most part, made up of interviews. Upon discovering this I was initally shocked as I'd been wondering how "songs" with titles like 'Big Tits Across America' were going to sound(!).

This album is in fact a collection of interview clips; adverts for TV & radio; and various other odds and sods edited into one big montage. The aforementioned 'Big Tits Across America' is around ten minutes long and features a US radio phone-in interview from January 1978, with a seemingly inebriated Steve Jones and more sober-sounding Paul Cook, in which Jones gradually and repeatedly asks callers if they have 'big tits', irrespective of what questions callers ask. Not particularly enlightening but possibly of historical interest to some(!).

The album also includes part of the classic Bill Grundy interview from December 1976 in which the Pistols respond to Grundy's paternal taunts and goading with a salvo of 4-letter words. Unfortunately this is not the full transcript of the interview but it does include the classic build-up of banter climaxing with the ultimate 'What A F***in' Rotter!' line from Jones. (The full unedited interview would have secured this review a full 5 stars - 4.5 is more accurate).

Another interesting segue of clips is 'The Complex World Of Johnny Rotten'. Here Rotten's mum is telling us that he was basically a normal kid grappling with his particular situation who wasn't gonna put up with any crap. Rotten is heard replying to a journalist's question about whether he really is a horrible person by stating: 'I know I'm not very nice. I'm the kiss of death to most people...'. Sid features prominently throughout with some classic 'punk' quotes and also provokes some interesting/drunken answers from Steve Jones when, for instance, Jones is asked where Sid is: "He's w***ing off" he shouts.

Also featured is an interview about the meaning of 'God Save The Queen'. One Pistol claims it's not the queen they're calling a moron - what they're really saying is that 'they made YOU a moron'. However by the end of the interview it's obvious they're winding up the media and having a laugh with it - I.E. Punk Rock, Sex Pistols style.

Overall a great album for samples & snippets of classic quotes from the Pistols (although not much Glen Matlock). McLaren contributes the odd quote including various lessons for 'The Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle' which ultimately this CD is part of. This is a laugh and a must for all Pistols fans interested in hearing them spout off (check out Sid's wayward philosophy of "When there's no more punks..."etc.).

Ultimately "It's A Swindle!"

Not music, but entertaining. 30 Nov 2002

Bits from ads and interviews. The not-too-carefully-crafted selling of the Pistols image worldwide. Essential in understanding punk, the pogo (dance), and punk's divergence into speed-metal, hardcore and thrash. The Sex Pistols WERE the turning point in punk-rock.
The Who told us we were pissed off, The Sex Pistols told us who to gob at.

I ordered this item and the company gladly took my $10 and never sent the CD, then refused to refund my money. Thieves! Amazon forced me to give them one star; why can't we have zero stars or even negative stars - they earned 2!

Features a number of interviews from various sources. Many with American radio stations. You really saw what a joke they made of American radio, industry and people who phoned in to talk. They were always opposed to stooping to making appearances for radio, record stores and the like not to mention press interviews.A interesting record I bought when this came out,it deserves a cd release.Just a shame the band ended up with a screwed up manager and bassist in the end and they never recovered.Read the excellant book by Noel Monk, their U.S. road manager chronicling their 12 date final tour in the States called '12 days on the road : sex pistols and america'. it also has lots of rare pics.get it on here while you can.
