The Rolling Stones in Exile

The Rolling Stones were formed in London in April 1962 by Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica, guitar), and Keith Richards (guitar, vocals). Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early line-up. R&B and blues cover songs dominated the Rolling Stones' early material, but their repertoire has always included rock ... CD Description

By the late seventies, The Rolling Stones were unquestionably the world’s greatest rock’n’roll band, a tag they thoroughly deserved and have yet to lose. They had moved effortlessly into open-air stadiums but also began a tradition of performing more intimate shows in theatres and clubs alongside their groundbreaking concerts in arenas. To the delight of their millions of fans, they have continued with this policy to the present. The world really was The Rolling Stones’ oyster in the late seventies, as their Canadian escapades made headlines around the world. They partied at Studio 54, came up with dancefloor favourites "Miss You" and "Emotional Rescue", and recorded in Paris, Nassau and New York. The eighties saw the band stretch the envelope further still, working with jazz great Sonny Rollins, film directors Julien Temple and Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and producers Chris Kimsey and Steve Lillywhite. Amazingly, the Rolling Stones topped these achievements with ever-more ambitious tours in the nineties and noughties, and recorded three more classic studio albums with acclaimed producer Don Was, in Dublin, Los Angeles, France and the Caribbean. Some Girls introduced a whole new generation to the music of the Stones. The infectious dance groove of "Miss You" topped the US charts, as did the album in 1978. Both releases also made the Top 3 in the UK, where the country-flavoured "Far Away Eyes", featuring Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, enjoyed substantial airplay. "Respectable", the follow-up single in Britain, proved that they could match the punks they had influenced so much. The US market preferred the mid-tempo "Beast of Burden" which went Top Ten there. A cover of The Temptations’ "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)", the driving "When The Whip Comes Down", Keith Richards’ vocal turn on "Before They Make Me Run" and the urgent "Shattered"--a US Top 30 single--make this a must-have album. Peter Corriston’s striking cover design, controversial at the time, remains a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some Girls got bigger and better 29 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
As a long time Stones fan and collector I was looking forward to this new release.
The most interesting thing about this re-issue is with no doubt the 2nd bonus disc. The Glimmertwins open finally their vaults. Most of the songs where available for a long time on bootlegs but it is really nice to see them in a deserved finished product.
In comparison to last years Exile on main street this is far better as the outtakes are way more interesting.
The Box set is for the collectors and it is really nice. The banned picture vinyl single of Beast of Burden is probably the top crop of this box. The reissue single sports the banned Lion cover, one of the highest collectible Stones singles ever. If you find the real thing your lucky...
I don't know why they have not included the full "Miss you" mix on disc 2, it would had enough room to fit it on.
I look forward to more Stones re-issues. If I could pick one it would be probably "Emotional Rescue". Not my favorite Stones album but the outtakes are great as with Some Girls.
In a nutshell - if you like the Some Girls album, get the "deluxe 2 disc Edition", it's all you need and will like.

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Last week I was really feed up, three weeks in the mail and it couldn't be traced in Hobart, then a knock at the door just moments ago, they found it and a lot of other undelivered parcels in a van that had a mechanical problem and was in there workshop, mystery solved,

I'm now going to get "stoned" with my friend now that his birthday present has arrived.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it, despite... 2 Dec 2011
By Commander Flake - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The most recent version of "Some Girls" has all of the problems of Universal Music's most recent re-release on it. After listening to the bonus disc, you won't be mad at yourself for buying this great release for (for me, at least) the FIFTH time (The Original vinyl in 1978, with the original graphics, bought at Sam Goody's flagship store in Manhattan, near Times Square. The Cassette, twice, the first one destroyed by playing it on a cold morning in my vehicle at the time, and then the Virgin CD, which is the best rendering of this, the best of this era in the Stones long history!)
The best bonus track is from an unlikely source, Hank Williams, Sr. "You win Again" with an angry tone, the Country/Western legend would never have dreamed of taking. "Claudine", should have been on the original release, but somehow it also doesn't feel right on this album. On a later album, perhaps, but it sat too long. It makes the cut at last, deservedly so, too. "Keep up Blues" fit the album better than "Claudine", but there had to have been a lively debate as to whether it would go on the album or not. It lost out in 1978, and like "Claudine", it waited 33 years too long to be heard. "Tallahasse Lassie" sounds like it would have been on "Exile on Main Street", and did not "fit" "Some Girls". The audio quality of all but "Petrol Blues" makes me wonder why these recordings sound so much better than the album/CD proper. Universal should have done a comprehensive re-working of the album, and chose not to. That having been said, the bonus tracks make this a must buy for Stones junkies. Keep the Virgin CD in your deluxe edition and put Universal's lesser CD in your vehicle du jour provided it has a CD player ;-)!

1.0 out of 5 stars ....Keith, Keith what you doin' (whistle whistle).... 3 Dec 2011
By Syd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Boy, I do not like what I am reading in these reviews of these new re-masters. In his book, Life, Keith said he often wiped the original mix tape so no one could mess with them later. I am taking good care of my Virgin issues because of all this stuff I read about these new issues. I did not have a single problem with a single note of any of those Virgin issues. They were awesome. The history of the Stones need some real help....Keith, Keith what you doin' (whistle whistle)......by the way, this review got roped in with all the other issues of this BUT to top it all off: you mean to tell me they put this terrible sounding, distorted issue in a deluxe box? Tell me this cannot be true?
