Four Out Of Five in Mixmag,
By Ernest*Scribbler (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Some Call It Godcore (Audio CD)
For me, this is my least favourite album by the Biccies. For a band that produced the utter genius of 'Breaking News', '24 Hour Garage People' and 'Referee's Alphabet', I couldn't really get the point of 'I, Trog', 'Fear My Wraith' or even 'Song For Europe' which seems to lack any humour at all - Nigel's ranting is usually a highlight, but it doesn't seem to work on this one. Musically as well, it's a bit rough and ready, and sounds as if it waas recorded in a hurry, especially after the polished masterpiece that was 'McIntyre, Treadmore and Davitt'.Having said that, it's not a bad album by any standards, and some of the high points are excellent, especially '£24.99 from Argos' which appears to have been played on a keyboard which was probably bought for £24.99 from Argos, and 'Even Men With Steel Hearts' is great. A good enough addition for established fans, but definitely not a starting point for the uninitiated.

Even men with steel hearts should buy this,

"Even men with steel hearts love to see a dog on the pitch..." This band write skewed songs with a skewed view on life and they are magnificent at it. No sexism, racism, or any other -ism to annoy anyone (although they do do a bit of cussing); they even take the mickey out of themselves. The last track on this CD, "Tour Jacket With Detachable Sleeves", is as odd as they come, telling the story of a night at a gig that goes wrong, but even so with comic timing that lessens the shock. ALL their albums are worth buying. Long may they continue.

Anyone who remembers the ageless "F***ing hell - it's Fred Titmuss" or "The Trumpton Riots" will love this album. Those who have never heard of Half Man Half Biscuit should be warned that they are not born-again evangelists, despite the album title. 'Some call it Godcore" manages to be very funny without getting boring. But if you think that Mike Flowers was the paradigm of "humour" music you'd best put your money away
