Product Description

Product Description
Deals with the author's creation of a garden in nine acres of hillside in the Scottish Highlands. The book describes the principles of planning such a garden while the challenge of translating them to other sites is left to the reader.

From the Publisher
Practical thoughts on marginal gardening
A truly intriguing, poetic, and thought-provoking book. The author has tended eight acres of spectacularly scenic hillside in the severe climate of the Scottish highlands for some 40 years. Based on the experience in his own "marginal" garden, G. F. Dutton offers ideas for those who are grappling with the delights and challenges of owning a similar piece of rural land. The marginal garden is defined by the author as one that differs as little as possible from the surrounding wildness, thus requiring little maintenance, yet enhanced just enough by caring human touch to satisfy the owner’s desire for garden adventure and pleasure. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just extraordinary, 11 Jan 2008
Gardening seems to have encouraged even less original thinking than house-decorating: a few styles are 'permissable' - and VERY few gardeners have ever managed to think of anything else.

But Prof. Geoffrey Dutton HAS thought what 'gardening' might mean and be with the extraordinary clarity of the important scientist that he is. AND it's very funny!

It's one of the few works of genius I've ever read.
