5.0 out of 5 stars An authoritative history of this fascinating line, 23 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Solway Junction Railway (Locomotion Papers) (Paperback)
For anyone who has visited the area around Bowness-on-Solway, the beauty and transquillity is enhanced by the fascinating sight of the remains of the Solway Viaduct. When I first visited the area, I marvelled at how a railway line could ever have been built across this lonely area - only to be demolished again! This book outlines the story of how and why the line was built, the battles against the elements on the Solway Firth and the line's premature closure and it includes photographs and plans of the lines in its operating days and shows some of the few remaining signs left of it. Most books on railways in this area only touch on the Solway Junction Railway but this one more than makes up for this.
