One of the primary responsibilities of the librarians (especially in the children's department or school media center) is to assist their young patrons with reading advice and selection compatible with that child's needs for such assistance. It is incumbent upon the librarian to work with parents and teachers in helping children learn to read by providing information and suggestions appropriate to motivating a child to read, as well as materials suitable for that purpose. In "Solving The Reading Riddle: The Librarian's Guide to Reading Instruction", independent library youth services consultant and children's book reviewer Rita Soltan has written a 120-page handbook of information, advice, and instruction on reading instruction theories and practices ranging form early literacy initiatives and read-aloud programs, to parent workshops and data collection. Very nicely organized and thoroughly 'user friendly', "Solving The Reading Riddle" is an ideal Library Science curriculum textbook and a highly recommended addition to academic library Science reference collections and professional reading lists.
