Review

"A comprehensive and practical guide which enables parents to understand their child's sleep pattern and to solve most common childhood sleep problems by choosing from a range of clearly explained and easy to follow techniques." -- Dr. Gregory Stores, Park Hospital for Children, University of Oxford

"Sleep problems can be very disruptive for everyone in the family. Often there is tremendous frustration, especially for the parents as they struggle to understand what is going on as they try first one tactic and then another, often without success. What parents are looking for is clear, sensible, and effective advice on exactly what to do, and when and how to do it. This book offers the answer to their sleepless nights. Dr Lyn Quine is a world authority on childrens sleep problems and she has successfully translated years of research and clinical experience into an easy-to-read guide, full of information and practical help. Parents can feel confident that the step-by-step programmes described here are soundly based in scientific study and yet they can easily be used at home by any parent." -- Colin Espie, Professor of Psychological Medicine, Gartnavel Royal Hospital, University of Glasgow

I have a 2 and a half year old boy who was a sick baby. Due to the constant comforting and breast feeding as a baby, we developed bad habits. By that I mean I fed him to sleep, then rocked him to sleep, then lay with him till he fell asleep. Then I fell pregnant again, suddenly I realised what we were doing was fine for now, but what do when another baby comes along. The health visitor lent me this book, I thought Id try it, but didnt hold out much hope. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I couldnt believe how well, and quickly it worked. The flow chart is so easy to follow, and gives you the right plan to follow. The first few nights were not easy, but I held my ground and by night 3, he had learned I wasnt giving in, from then it was quite easy. I am at the stage of saying good night, and leaving him. He still shouts out to make sure im there once or twice, but what an improvement. I decided to buy the book for any further sleep problems, and also hopefully will help stop any sleep problems with new baby when it comes. Definetely recommend this book.

For anyone suffering sleep deprivation with their toddler. My 3 year old was the perfect sleeper up until just after her third birthday. We then suffered 3 months of broken nights - not just the occasional stirring but on the hour, every hour, with her being hysterical. We were completely at the end of our tether and had completely run out of ideas. This book make us gather our thoughts, stay calm, and think things through properly (which had been very difficult). Within 4 days our daugther was sleeping through the night again - it was unbelievable! I was on the verge of giving up and then I read this. I would recommend this book to anyone - even my Health Visitor is now going to order a copy! Thank you Lyn Quine.

My son was waking at night, shaking and jerking uncontrollably, it was scary. Within 10 minutes of reading this book, I understood what was going on. The book went further and gave me a programme to follow, and it has worked like a dream.
I used the book again for a problem with my other child, who just did not want to go to sleep. I was expecting at least a fortnight of confrontation before he accepted the new schedule, but after only 2 nights he fell into the new routine and is sticking to it.
The book was easy to read, and easy to follow. I am very pleased that I bought this book and have already loaned it to a friend.

1 year ago my son suddenly decided he was not going to go to sleep alone. He also decided if he woke up in the night, he wanted mummy there. After one night, when he was awake for 3 hours in the middle of the night, a friend suggested this book. It is NOT about controlled crying - my son would not respond to that - but, instead, gives a few different options for every sleep problem.

I followed the gradual extinction program. This involves slowly moving towards the door, moving every 2-3 nights but only when your child has accepted the move. My son sometimes took 5 nights to accept a move so it was 2 months later that I was sitting outside the door on the landing. At this point my son finally clicked that I was not coming back in and started to get out of bed. Another program to follow and after 5 days he was staying in bed and sleeping on his own.

For the past week I have now been putting him to bed, pulling the door to, and going downstairs. This book was a life saver. No more sitting upstairs for half hour to an hour. No more middle of the night wake ups.

This book was recommended by a friend and it has been fantastic.
I liked the way it was divided up for each problem area.
Once I read it without falling asleep (been 4 months) since full night sleep,
I put it into practise. Really works, takes time but worth it!

This book is easy to understand, easy to to find which parts relate to you and your child. I also like that it helps you understand that you have to keep a diary on your child to gain the knowledge to find out why they are not sleeping very handy book.
